SoberNotMature - Episode 176 (Podevangelist Guilt & Other Criticisms)

This week we have...
Mike and Bill's 4th of July, Freedom Episode.
Mike started off with his reading and yes, it was about freedom. During our active addiction, we had no freedom at all. We were ruled by alcohol and drugs and life was a chore.
Now we can do what we want, when we want (within reason) and life is far better. Enjoy the freedom.
We ranted a bit about podcasters begging for money and using guilt along the way. We don't like that.
Then it was on to social social media, being humble, using kind words, insignificant troubles, being critical and the word Diddy came up. Don't worry, we aren't supporters.
We wrapped up with a few articles and a wet crotch at the airport.
Enjoy the episode.

Bill
Alright everyone, welcome once again to another episode of Sober Not Mature. And you know what, let's just start off by saying happy fucking 4th of July.
00:00:13.10
Mike
Yes, happy Independence Day. Mm-hmm.
00:00:16.73
Bill
Get out there and do something independently today.
00:00:20.47
Mike
Right, don't be dependent.
00:00:22.80
Bill
Right. Yeah. Dependence is no good. Alcohol dependence, drug dependence, codependence.
00:00:27.37
Mike
Right. a
00:00:30.41
Bill
What other dependent words? We were calling each other like chump names starting off. We can go with so it's dependent names here are coming up too.
00:00:36.52
Mike
Right, and don't wear Depends.
00:00:36.67
Bill
but
00:00:40.08
Bill
Well, unless you have to, because I guess the alternative is shatting your pants, which, yeah, we don't we don't want to do that these days.
00:00:41.39
Mike
Right.
00:00:44.65
Mike
Yes.
00:00:47.42
Bill
You know what? um I don't know. there I suppose. what How old are you today? How old am I today?
00:00:52.29
Mike
What?
00:00:54.24
Bill
yeah ah we're We're closer to shitting our pants up you know in later the later in life days than we were from you know when we we stopped.
00:00:59.79
Mike
Right. Shedding our pants in the early days. Right.
00:01:04.08
Bill
Yeah, we're closer to starting again than we were from stopping. God damn, that's depressing. Jesus Christ, what the fuck's wrong with me?
00:01:09.95
Mike
Isn't it? I don't know.
00:01:12.54
Bill
ah Well, yeah, do it you want to make a list? How much time do we got, right?
00:01:17.40
Mike
Apparently not much. Right.
00:01:20.80
Bill
Exactly. But yeah, so I don't know.
00:01:22.06
Mike
Oh, yeah.
00:01:23.62
Bill
I mean, as I was thinking about it the other day, and I mean, I know it's not even halfway through the summer yet, but Fourth of July kind of feels like, but I don't know, feel like summer's over, but I mean, it's ah it is a halfway-ish point.
00:01:33.70
Bill
I mean, not really, but um you know, in in these areas, I mean, September is still, ah can still be a beautiful month and all that stuff.
00:01:34.16
Mike
right
00:01:39.55
Mike
no yeah
00:01:40.13
Bill
But um yeah, I don't know, just from the from the summertime. And um I had a thought too, that maybe we can talk about it after we do the reading and stuff. But My thought was that this might be the biggest drinking holiday of the summer.
00:01:53.61
Bill
I could be wrong, but we can later do a little coffee talk, discuss on that if we want.
00:01:57.54
Mike
a
00:01:58.17
Bill
But don't need to hijack the reading and all that crap off the bat.
00:02:02.55
Mike
I
00:02:03.76
Bill
So yeah, we're gonna this this episode, if everyone is listening on Friday, it is...
00:02:07.84
Mike
h
00:02:08.33
Bill
okay so was going to say dropping, but I don't like that word. I don't know why I don't like it.
00:02:12.53
Mike
i don't know.
00:02:12.67
Bill
um
00:02:13.06
Mike
Uh-huh.
00:02:13.46
Bill
I was listening to Rob Lowe's podcast. They had Jim Gaffigan on, which, I mean, he's he's funny enough. I enjoy his humor, enjoy him.
00:02:19.75
Mike
Sure.
00:02:21.09
Bill
um And something was brought up, and Rob said something about something dropped on this day. And he's like, you know what? He goes, I don't use that word anymore. He goes, I use the word flop.
00:02:30.66
Mike
We just flop it out.
00:02:31.47
Bill
Something flop.
00:02:32.34
Mike
Okay.
00:02:32.78
Bill
Yeah, just something flopped on that day.
00:02:33.84
Mike
Right.
00:02:34.18
Bill
And I'm like, we'll we'll give credit to Mr.
00:02:34.72
Mike
We
00:02:36.28
Bill
Gaffigan. But I think from now on, I want to use the word flop. Because like you just said, just flopping on the table.
00:02:39.93
Mike
are. It's a 4th of July miracle.
00:02:41.71
Bill
So from from now on, ladies and gentlemen, even though the majority of our audience is male, our episodes will flop in your face every Saturday.
00:02:43.91
Mike
Okay.
00:02:50.79
Bill
With the exception of today, we're flopping it out early.
00:02:52.82
Mike
right we are it's it's a fourth of july miracle
00:02:58.30
Bill
if laura I say say a Fourth of July flop.
00:03:02.40
Mike
Right. do have
00:03:04.01
Bill
All right. Okay. Enough of my fucking nonsense. So I get, we got, we got another, you know, what hour and well, 87 minutes for me to, for me to talk nonsense. How about we do a reading mic?
00:03:12.55
Mike
one.
00:03:13.19
Bill
do you have one?
00:03:14.33
Mike
I do have one. uh...
00:03:19.85
Mike
Right. So, um you know, I went to the books and looked up freedom in the index to see what the hell we had. And apparently we've read a few of these, so it's not our first us sojourn into freedom.
00:03:30.30
Bill
Right.
00:03:36.73
Mike
But um and actually, I was looking at, I grabbed As Bill Sees It, too, but...
00:03:41.95
Bill
Oh, really?
00:03:42.30
Mike
ah Yeah, but nothing really jumped out all that much. So i this is from Keep It Simple. This is November 24th, and here we go.
00:03:55.80
Mike
Freedom is not enough. Lyndon B. Johnson. believe he was a president. Let's see. um We are free of alcohol and other drugs.
00:04:10.56
Mike
We've been given a second or third chance. For that, we thank our higher power. We started a new life, but to keep this life, we need to change.
00:04:21.60
Mike
We need new friends. We need to let our higher power guide our hearts, minds, and bodies. We need to learn new values and how to stand up for them.
00:04:33.00
Mike
We need to learn how to give and to receive. Freedom from dependence is not enough. We also want to be happy and to do something with our lives.
00:04:43.83
Mike
So each day we keep learning. We keep growing. Each day without alcohol or other drugs is a gift. Prayer for the day. Higher power, you set me free.
00:04:56.04
Mike
Now teach me to stay free. Guide me for keeping my freedom is a big task." Action for the day. i will meditate on my freedom.
00:05:07.22
Mike
I will take time to list all the ways I am now free.
00:05:11.78
Bill
Hmm. So should we take a few minutes and meditate our freedom?
00:05:16.45
Mike
Yes. Mm-hmm.
00:05:16.94
Bill
Or yes, meditate on our freedom. Okay. There's our freedom. We're meditating. Okay. So um I guess that in to begin with ah maybe the, you know, the list and i don't know whether we want to do a a list or I mean, it's hard to say that.
00:05:22.18
Mike
Right.
00:05:30.21
Bill
I mean, everything, you know, is is part of our freedom, but um What do you think, like specific ways that that you feel free now, um you know, even whether it was in the beginning or now, you know, 15 years later, I'm sure that freedom has grown.
00:05:39.19
Mike
Right.
00:05:44.82
Mike
No, absolutely. Um, I mean, well, you know, first thing that comes to mind is, you know, um, I cut off work today and I did not have to get a drink.
00:05:56.23
Mike
I did not. Right. Um, right um Yeah, you know, i but freedom, it's it's huge. I can, i you know, I can do whatever the fuck I want, pretty much, which is pretty damn nice.
00:06:09.97
Mike
um Well, well, I can, you know, I had to come home and do this thing. So that's that's an obligation, but that's a responsibility. And that's part of the freedom.
00:06:20.75
Mike
You know, ill yeah, we're taping on a on a Wednesday, the rare Wednesday, because we got plans this weekend.
00:06:21.00
Bill
Right.
00:06:28.07
Mike
um But, you know, that's the thing. Right. So, yeah, i I don't have to do this for eight days or whatever. So that's freedom right there.
00:06:37.58
Bill
yeah
00:06:39.83
Mike
No, but, um, yeah, you know, have freedom. I can, I can travel. I can, I can, I can, God, I can do lots and lots of stuff. I can go anywhere I want to.
00:06:50.77
Mike
I can, yeah, it's, it's a beautiful thing. You know, um, I'm, I mean, you're, you're traveling all over the place. I've got some plans in the,
00:06:58.83
Bill
Right.
00:07:01.30
Mike
you know, near future to go some places and do some things. And yeah, it's, it's pretty damn cool, man.
00:07:09.01
Bill
Right. Yeah. And, the you know, and obviously it it always, anytime we talk about freedom, it takes me back to, you know, when, when I was driving from, you know, Brookfield, Wisconsin, up to Germantown to get Derek for dinner and, um you know, drove up and had dinner and came back and, um you know, I was staying at a hotel there for work.
00:07:25.91
Bill
And, you know, you figure at that point I was, but don't know, probably if I, if I wasn't four years sober, I was probably three and a half, you know, years sober.
00:07:33.50
Mike
isn
00:07:34.70
Bill
And, you know, literally in that timeframe, whatever the number of liquor stores that I counted, especially when it got to be around Menominee Falls area where I used to live.
00:07:43.42
Mike
Right.
00:07:43.55
Bill
I mean, there was there was like five or six that I used to go to. And then all the other ones that I noticed along the way. um And, you know, I texted you and I'm like, God, I can't believe, you know, blah, blah, blah, this and that.
00:07:53.61
Bill
And, you know, and then you're just like, enjoy the freedom. And it just.
00:07:56.21
Mike
Yeah.
00:07:57.15
Bill
You know, and it is because um I remember when when I worked for, well, a number of different companies, I did a lot of in-state travel in Wisconsin, whether it was going to see, um you know, potential clients, depending on the job I was in, conferences and that sort of thing.
00:08:07.35
Mike
Mm-hmm.
00:08:13.88
Bill
And every town that I drove into, um every town.
00:08:17.78
Mike
Mm-hmm.
00:08:18.14
Bill
I'd look right away, where's the liquor store, you know?
00:08:20.16
Mike
Right.
00:08:21.00
Bill
And I remember traveling with this one company I was, I was working with and this guy, ah one of the guys and I did this long roundabout trip actually through Indiana. He had clients all through there. and We did, he flew down out of Minneapolis.
00:08:35.10
Bill
I met him at Midway, I think I parked there and then we, he rented a car and we drove, i mean, all over the state of Indiana visiting his clients and And we stopped at, speaking of, we were talking about Red Roof Inn a few weeks ago.
00:08:47.41
Mike
Sure.
00:08:48.16
Bill
We stayed at a Red Roof Inn and we both had, you know, separate rooms. It was cool. So I worked for companies before where I had a room with people, which is fine, but, you know. um And right by ah like a busy highway and stuff, I think we were outside of Indianapolis, if I remember correctly.
00:09:02.52
Bill
and And I looked around and literally, I mean, we we went out to dinner, had a couple of drinks, you know, doing whatever.
00:09:07.82
Mike
sure
00:09:07.96
Bill
And I used to, when I traveled, you grab a bottle or a six pack or something, you know. So I'm sitting there in my room and I'm like, I walked outside and I'm like, fuck, man, I look across and there's a gas station as i across this busy fucking highway and it's a gas station that doesn't have fucking booze. They don't have beer. They have nothing. i'm like, God fucking damn it.
00:09:26.50
Mike
Sure. Oh, yeah.
00:09:27.63
Bill
And I wasn't looking to get loaded, but that was my that was my habit, you know.
00:09:29.32
Mike
sure so yeah
00:09:32.01
Bill
And I'm like, so I bought junk food it or whatever while was over there. But, you know, I, I remember on that, on that trip specifically, you know, um wondering and thinking, you know, where I want to have a couple of drinks if we're not going to be out, you know, like that, that we party it up, but you know what I mean?
00:09:47.02
Mike
Mm-hmm. Yeah.
00:09:47.77
Bill
um And I mean, that was, i was a slave to alcohol um and it was literally interrupting my, you know, when I could have just hung back and relaxed, you know?
00:09:51.64
Mike
Mm-hmm.
00:09:57.74
Mike
Sure. Oh, yeah. I mean, you know, when I first started driving truck the first couple of years before I, you know, couldn't do it anymore.
00:10:02.24
Bill
Right.
00:10:07.06
Mike
um Yeah. I mean, i I knew i you know, I traveled the entire country and I mean, I, I knew which truck stops had beer, um you know, where, where I could go to get hard liquor. Cause that was part of it too.
00:10:25.22
Mike
um Had to get my bourbon, man.
00:10:27.25
Bill
right
00:10:27.29
Mike
And I mean, yeah, I, you know, um, I've talked about on here, you know, the, uh, Little Rock, Arkansas was fucking beautiful. Cause there was a huge truck stop there and right on the edge of the property, like on the other, yeah. On the other side of the parking lot, um, was a liquor store, full liquor store. That was fucking great.
00:10:45.53
Mike
Uh, Joplin, Missouri, you know, uh, truck stop there, man. There was, ah I called it the, uh, the ATF store, man, the, you know, alcohol, tobacco and firearms.
00:10:56.29
Mike
Um, it was, yeah, it was, it was fireworks and it was cigarettes and it was hard liquor. Um, I loved going there cause I could stock up on all kinds of good stuff, you know?
00:11:07.24
Bill
Right? Yeah. Yeah. Mm-hmm.
00:11:08.81
Mike
I mean, but yeah, I mean, and I, like I said, I was traveling the entire country, but I mean, I, would go places that I had been before. And I mean, i knew i knew um liquor stores that were like near the highway that I could pull off and park a truck somewhere near it, like within, you know, maybe a 15 minute walk.
00:11:33.86
Mike
Because I had, yeah, right, you know.
00:11:34.25
Bill
ah
00:11:36.91
Mike
um i mean, slave, man. My whole fucking world revolved around where am I going to be able to re-up?
00:11:40.04
Bill
right
00:11:45.42
Mike
Yeah, it was ah a lovely way to live.
00:11:49.31
Bill
yeah and there was a um a lot of the the conferences and things like that that we went to um they were out towards just for the most part they were you know because i lived in whether it was menominee falls or germantown or waukesha or heartland i was always out in that area kind of where i was you know like when you came out and a little bit south of there maybe
00:12:04.64
Mike
Right.
00:12:07.77
Bill
um But they were, you know, it's Madison, the Dell, Stevens Point, all those sort of things. So you'd have to go out 94 towards Madison, you know, at some point, either be in Madison or split off from there and go a little bit north or whatever.
00:12:20.72
Bill
And there's a there's a gas station. It's a quick trip um in Lake Mills, Wisconsin, which is, I don't know, probably if i'm thinking half hour or so outside of Madison.
00:12:31.57
Bill
um But I would stop there all the time.
00:12:31.71
Mike
Mm-hmm.
00:12:33.13
Bill
And because there was a liquor store across the across the street. So you pull into the gas station, little, little hole in the wall liquor store.
00:12:38.05
Mike
Right.
00:12:41.30
Mike
Mm-hmm.
00:12:41.41
Bill
But I knew that was there. And I go over to quick trip and grab, you know, grab a Diet seven up or something like that. And then I'd have my coffee mug and, you know, fucking mix my drink and be on my way.
00:12:46.11
Mike
Yeah. Mm-hmm. Right.
00:12:50.73
Bill
And that's, uh, that's the, the place I went to when I, and and I had a flip phone at the time, but, um, I dropped my phone and my whiskey, you know?
00:12:51.01
Mike
Yeah.
00:12:58.81
Bill
And, you know, trying to explain that I was married at the time, you know, and, and I'm like, son of a bitch, I'll go into the bathroom and fucking hand dryer and stuff. And, you know, again, it's a, it's a flip phone. It's not as technologically advanced as these ones are, but they're not supposed to get fucking wet, you know, certainly not with sticky booze.
00:13:11.07
Mike
Mm-hmm. Right. Yeah.
00:13:14.88
Bill
Um, And it worked, um you know, but the button started to stick. And by the time it was just a one day trip I went to, by the time I got back, I mean, I, what I told Dawn was, I'm like, i so I was so stupid.
00:13:19.17
Mike
Mm-hmm. Sure. Yes. Yeah. Yeah.
00:13:25.24
Bill
I'm like, I set my, set my phone on the, you know, on the sink while i was washing my hands. And I said, the water, you know, the faucet, you know, obviously was malfunctioning, quote unquote, got my phone all wet, you know?
00:13:29.78
Mike
e sure yes
00:13:36.77
Bill
So, um and, and I think I had to get it.
00:13:36.89
Mike
yeah
00:13:40.00
Bill
I'm pretty sure I had to replace it. I'm pretty sure I did, you know?
00:13:42.76
Mike
Right.
00:13:42.97
Bill
Um, but same thing. I knew literally, like you just said, um, I never had to walk.
00:13:47.20
Mike
Yeah.
00:13:47.85
Bill
I mean, I had a car, I didn't have to drive in, in a big truck, but, um, yeah, it, it really was.
00:13:49.09
Mike
Right.
00:13:52.80
Bill
I planned. And obviously both of us did. We planned our, not just our lives, but these trips and everything we were doing.
00:13:56.07
Mike
Yeah.
00:13:58.72
Mike
Yeah.
00:14:00.00
Bill
Um, no fucking freedom.
00:14:00.09
Mike
Absolutely.
00:14:02.26
Bill
None. Right.
00:14:02.59
Mike
No, no. I mean, yeah. You know, I, and I mean, that's the thing. Most of the truck stops, you know, I mean, you didn't sell hard liquor, you know, it was, you could get beer at pretty much most of them.
00:14:11.96
Bill
Right.
00:14:13.61
Mike
Um, but yeah, you know, liquor was, I had to work at keeping keeping a bottle in the truck for when I was done working.
00:14:21.15
Bill
right
00:14:22.40
Mike
Yeah. you know, I had to have it. Um, yeah. Yeah.
00:14:28.33
Bill
I know. Yeah. And it's just, you know, finding in the, I've talked about it before, you know, the stores that, um and I don't know, I mean, and I don't know anywhere anymore, thankfully, you know, how late, you know, they sell booze, but um you know, there was a couple of stores in Wisconsin, a couple of gas stations, relatively speak.
00:14:38.50
Mike
All right.
00:14:43.64
Bill
I knew where those were in the Milwaukee or Waukesha area, you know, that sold after nine.
00:14:46.36
Mike
Yeah.
00:14:48.04
Bill
It usually was just beer, but yeah, Um, most of the time I'd have to plan and, you know, go like right.
00:14:52.41
Mike
Yeah.
00:14:53.33
Bill
I'm sitting there like almost waiting outside the door, you know, when the liquor store opens at, you know, fucking eight in the morning.
00:14:56.90
Mike
hmm. Mm hmm. Yeah. Oh, yeah.
00:15:01.27
Bill
by
00:15:01.48
Mike
I remember standing in front of the liquor store in California.
00:15:01.79
Bill
like
00:15:04.56
Mike
They opened at six, you know, standing there at 545, man, going, fuck, hurry up, hurry up.
00:15:10.35
Bill
Right. Yeah.
00:15:12.88
Mike
Yeah. Fuck that shit, man. I like, yeah, exactly.
00:15:15.14
Bill
I know.
00:15:16.80
Mike
The freedom doing what we want when we want nothing holding us down like that. It's a beautiful thing.
00:15:22.65
Bill
Right. Yeah. the The worst thing that I do, and I don't plan my trips around them, but um I'll drive an extra you know half hour and wait to to pass or to come up to a Love's truck stop because I like it.
00:15:33.33
Mike
Uh-huh.
00:15:33.83
Bill
I like Love's.
00:15:34.26
Mike
Yeah.
00:15:34.51
Bill
you know
00:15:34.83
Mike
Right.
00:15:35.30
Bill
I'll go to a TA or whatever, but i mean I've made a i made a point since I've been traveling. i don't go to I only go to truck stops when I stop because...
00:15:42.69
Mike
Mm-hmm.
00:15:43.09
Bill
You know, they're um they're active. They're they're open. um
00:15:46.11
Mike
Well.
00:15:46.44
Bill
You know, coffee's fresh all the time.
00:15:48.69
Mike
Right.
00:15:48.96
Bill
um There's always people around regardless of where I'm at or what time I'm driving and, you know, whatever.
00:15:52.56
Mike
Mm-hmm.
00:15:52.84
Bill
Just, you know, it's more of a safety thing. But um I just I do like I like loves.
00:15:54.67
Mike
Yeah.
00:15:57.32
Bill
I like the coffee there. Very rarely do I run across one that's it's not really clean and the people aren't nice.
00:16:03.48
Mike
Right.
00:16:03.91
Bill
and
00:16:04.51
Mike
Yeah.
00:16:05.17
Bill
i walked into one um i know maybe a month ago, wherever it was. and it was it was towards the end of my trip. and i didn't I didn't want coffee at that time. any I think I was going to grab a soda or something like that.
00:16:15.71
Mike
Right.
00:16:17.40
Bill
and i I pulled in and I went in. as Right as I walk in, the whole... coffee station, you see a thing on the door. It's like, we don't have any coffee, you know, replacing things, whatever.
00:16:25.56
Mike
Yeah. Yeah.
00:16:26.86
Bill
I'm like, man, there's going to be some fucking pissed off truckers here, you know?
00:16:29.59
Mike
yeah
00:16:30.54
Bill
Um, but they had a, uh, like a Hardee's or something in there. So people could go walk into the the store and it was attached to that restaurant. But yeah, loves, I mean, their whole coffee station, they were replacing or redoing all the tubing or whatever it was.
00:16:43.12
Bill
And, and, uh, um, you know, i just said to the lady when I, when I went up there, I'm like,
00:16:43.47
Mike
Right. Mm-hmm.
00:16:48.07
Bill
Like, oh, I see your coffee stations now. She's like, oh yeah, you can get coffee next door. That's how I knew.
00:16:52.19
Mike
right
00:16:52.35
Bill
And I said, no, no, no. I said, I'm fine. But I said, my first thought was, I said, you're going to have a lot of angry, angry truck drivers.
00:16:56.46
Mike
he
00:16:57.95
Bill
And she goes, no, if they've been going over to whatever, again, whatever the restaurant was, you know. But yeah, it's rare. have Other than that, I mean, it's, again, that's, That's the the the biggest, ah that's the only thing i'm I don't want to see me being a slave to.
00:17:10.79
Bill
It's a preference. I'd rather go to, you know, loves, but I won't go.
00:17:11.84
Mike
Sure. Yeah.
00:17:14.36
Bill
I won't go to some dinky gas station. You don't know what the fuck you're getting into. Even even swiping a card at a fucking little ricky-dick, you know, who knows?
00:17:17.56
Mike
Yeah.
00:17:21.98
Mike
Right.
00:17:22.77
Bill
I mean, I don't have a lot of money, but I don't want i don't want it stolen.
00:17:25.94
Mike
Yeah. Yeah. What little I have I want to hang on to.
00:17:28.51
Bill
Yeah, and that's that's part of the problem, the fact that I don't necessarily have a lot of money. I can't can be having some motherfucker stealing it.
00:17:36.02
Mike
Right.
00:17:37.84
Bill
ah But to begin with in here, obviously freedom, I think it started off in that opening part was freedom is not enough, which I like that, you know, because obviously if there's everything else that goes along with it.
00:17:44.40
Mike
Mm-hmm.
00:17:46.89
Mike
Right.
00:17:47.01
Bill
um But the the need to change and then, you know, obviously higher power or, you know, I mean, I thought about it too. We've got, you know, other people around us that that are there to guide us, right?
00:17:55.02
Mike
Mm-hmm. Absolutely. Right. Yeah. You know, again, as as long as it's not me. Mm-hmm. Right.
00:18:04.07
Bill
Yeah, I got myself to this to this interchange or exit or whatever you want to call it or this rest area.
00:18:08.08
Mike
okay
00:18:11.34
Mike
Right.
00:18:12.31
Bill
The Keating Center, the rest area. but
00:18:14.17
Mike
Right.
00:18:15.52
Bill
yeah That is what I thought. I'm like, yeah, get kick back. You know I've said told that story before, but yeah, little did I know.
00:18:20.61
Mike
Mm-hmm.
00:18:21.54
Bill
Little did I know. But to second quick side note here, thinking of the 4th of July, I mentioned the Keating Center. So, I mean, clearly we weren't working yet, but you were a house father by that time, right?
00:18:33.18
Bill
You had to have been.
00:18:33.61
Mike
Oh, yeah. Yeah.
00:18:35.13
Bill
Yeah, and I wouldn't have, God, well, shit, I would have been, no.
00:18:38.20
Mike
Yeah, you would have been too. Because, I mean, yeah, by fourth of July.
00:18:40.75
Bill
Oh, yeah, fuck, you were you were at 30 days.
00:18:41.10
Mike
Yeah.
00:18:42.68
Bill
i was at, yeah, I was at 60, okay. um Yeah, so we were both house fathers at that time. because I don't remember, um and I look back just out of curiosity. I Googled it, and 4th of July in 2010, it was a Sunday.
00:18:51.16
Mike
Mm hmm.
00:18:55.37
Mike
Sunday. Yes.
00:18:56.63
Bill
Yeah, so that would have been visit day, but did we get, i don't remember if we were, Memorial Day, know for a fact, I mean, we didn't go anywhere, but.
00:19:03.45
Mike
Right. um Well, I... So, um it was a Sunday. i was at Pyridus Sunday. Imagine that.
00:19:12.65
Bill
Oh.
00:19:12.94
Mike
um Yeah, and and we went to... So, we finished the meeting. Meeting usually finishes around nine-ish. And, um you know, that's when it's starting to get dark. So, we... um got in Foxy Don's car and went to his house because you could see the liquid fireworks from his house.
00:19:30.43
Bill
Huh.
00:19:30.73
Mike
I remember that.
00:19:32.10
Bill
hu
00:19:32.37
Mike
And um we got there and we like just kind of pulled in and we're, you know, whatever starting to, you know, mill around there. So I don't know. four or five of us something like that and um and somebody found out somehow some way oh that marty was being marty and uh everybody needed to be back at the house pronto so uh i didn't see any fireworks that well other than marty's um
00:19:46.78
Bill
Thank
00:20:06.22
Mike
So, yeah, so Don was like, all right fine, get in the car, let's go. So, yeah, he took us back to the rock, and yeah um I don't remember exactly, but we got our asses back there. We were back by 930 or whatever, because, yeah, bardi was Marty was like, everybody needs to be back in, or there's going to be trouble.
00:20:18.47
Bill
Right.
00:20:23.79
Mike
Okay, all right.
00:20:25.62
Bill
Here's going to be hell to pay, God damn it.
00:20:27.40
Mike
That's right.
00:20:29.64
Bill
um Yeah, I just don't. I was thinking about that the other day, a couple of days ago, I think. And I'm like, I just don't remember. Memorial Day was the you know the whole um you know bags tournament and whatever we did.
00:20:38.26
Mike
see
00:20:38.86
Bill
i just don't remember for 4th of July. But I don't know. I'm sure I went to the that point.
00:20:42.45
Mike
well memorial day i remember because that's the day marty made me a fucking house father because i had fire watched the night before so i was up all night and you know went and uh went to sleep and well i was helping marty in the kitchen getting all the shit ready for memorial day and he was all yeah that's what he asked me so what would you think about being a house father
00:20:47.78
Bill
Oh, yeah. Right.
00:20:51.60
Bill
Right.
00:21:05.30
Mike
No, that's but that's not what I said.
00:21:07.07
Bill
right yeah
00:21:08.96
Mike
That's what I thought. What I said was, whatever you need, Marty.
00:21:13.83
Bill
Yeah, that's where yeah yeah Mike just sat back and said, you know what? um Let me weigh the pros and cons.
00:21:18.60
Mike
yes
00:21:19.02
Bill
i'm go to get I'm going to get back to you in just a little bit.
00:21:20.75
Mike
Let me get back to you, Marty. Right.
00:21:23.20
Bill
In just a little bit.
00:21:23.25
Mike
hey
00:21:24.96
Bill
I wonder how that wouldve would have went over. Probably not well.
00:21:26.68
Mike
no
00:21:27.51
Bill
Probably not well at all.
00:21:31.10
Bill
But yeah, I was yeah i guess i wasn't I wasn't thinking right away, but yeah, both of us would have been house fathers. I think I was going probably still going to firefighters at that time, um you know that meeting.
00:21:35.73
Mike
Mm hmm.
00:21:38.57
Mike
Right.
00:21:39.85
Bill
But i don't remember. That was like a 7 o'clock meeting. But either way, I guess, ah ah speaking of that, that if you're if you're saying that, I'm sure we all we all had to get back, um obviously get back there.
00:21:47.29
Mike
hmm.
00:21:48.63
Bill
So, yeah. I don't know.
00:21:49.97
Mike
Yup.
00:21:50.08
Bill
I mean, it's ah again, the the thing that is, is that, you know, the that that place, I mean, that place being in the Keating Center. No, it wasn't it wasn't high end. It wasn't special.
00:22:00.28
Mike
No.
00:22:00.31
Bill
You know, we didn't have a swimming pool and, ah you know, ah volleyball court and all those sort of things.
00:22:02.52
Mike
no
00:22:05.00
Bill
But um literally exactly. um i I didn't know it. Maybe you didn't know it either, but it's exactly what what we needed, you know. So somebody else doing for us what we could not do for ourselves.
00:22:14.72
Mike
yeah yeah
00:22:19.34
Bill
I think I've heard heard something about that before.
00:22:19.50
Mike
absolutely
00:22:22.56
Bill
But so, yeah, that was ah that was a good one. And yeah, freedom one from November.
00:22:26.06
Mike
yeah
00:22:27.40
Bill
So almost around the Thanksgiving time. But interesting. Interesting.
00:22:31.50
Mike
ah
00:22:31.76
Bill
But um yeah. So any anything else on the on the reading or you good on that?
00:22:36.15
Mike
Yeah, I'm good.
00:22:37.99
Bill
Okay. Cool. But um yeah, so yeah, one of the reasons it were that we're obviously doing this a little bit early, I think you just want a little bit of time to just do nothing this weekend, which why not?
00:22:47.88
Mike
Right? Mm-hmm.
00:22:49.84
Bill
You know, have a long weekend from work.
00:22:50.38
Mike
right
00:22:51.24
Bill
And this is this is a form of work. I mean, it's not terrible work, but...
00:22:54.71
Mike
isn't it
00:22:55.24
Bill
Um, work nonetheless, but, uh, but yeah, i mean, I'm, I was able to, you know, book that place down and down in Kentucky. So I'm, I'm heading out Friday morning and I could have done it. You know, i it's a, I, even this place ah that I'm going to, it's got an ethernet connection.
00:23:07.76
Bill
The internet's fine. I checked everything.
00:23:09.01
Mike
Right.
00:23:09.53
Bill
Cause, um, you know, I always want to make sure that I have that as a backup if we're doing this, but, um Yeah, it'll be nice. I mean, I think that here's a funny part, too, that in our one of the are not my manager. He's on vacation this week, but the the one above him, her name is Stacy. She's really fucking cool. I still to this day, I don't know what her fucking title is, but.
00:23:30.09
Mike
Cool.
00:23:30.12
Bill
Um, she's the boss of our manager and she, over all of our departments and, but super, super fucking cool.
00:23:32.68
Mike
sure
00:23:37.27
Mike
go
00:23:37.33
Bill
Um, but she sent out a, an email today and about something else, but said also for, you know, for, ah Friday we get paid for, you know, eight hours. It just automatically does that, but we normally only work.
00:23:46.38
Mike
Mm-hmm. Right. Mm-hmm.
00:23:49.36
Bill
Six hours on a Friday. Okay. Because, you know, it's from, you know, eight to eight to three, but we take an hour lunch rather than half hour that we do. So she had put in there, she's like, you know, if you've been doing half hour lunches all week, which I think majority of us do, um she's like, no overtime, you know, whenever, whenever you've got your, your 40 hours, you got to clock out tomorrow.
00:24:04.27
Mike
Right. Right. Mm-hmm.
00:24:09.76
Mike
right
00:24:09.82
Bill
And I'm like, I'm like, okay. You know, I'm like, I'm not a big deal. Listen, I've lost it. i'm sure I'll be fine. But then I wasn't thinking about the fact that again, six hours we're getting paid for eight. So I, I may actually be done theoretically with a half hour lunch versus an hour. I think I might be done by three 30 tomorrow. I think.
00:24:26.87
Mike
Nice.
00:24:27.53
Bill
Or right in that area, but I got to take a look at it in the morning. But yeah, I mean, cause she, she made it clear.
00:24:30.47
Mike
yeah
00:24:32.05
Bill
She's like, no overtime. You know, she's like, you need to clock out.
00:24:34.13
Mike
Right. Exactly.
00:24:36.03
Bill
So she's, they don't fucking care. They're just like, okay, well you guys got to get, get the fuck out of there, you know?
00:24:40.06
Mike
right
00:24:40.16
Bill
So um I'm not going to complain. So.
00:24:43.10
Mike
exactly
00:24:44.33
Bill
Yeah. Give me a chance to get this, this thing together and get it obviously ready to roll. And yeah, Saturday morning. So, or Friday morning. So my, my initial thought, and i think I told you I was going plan on, um you know, leaving a little bit early. i can't check in. We'll get to the Airbnb until three.
00:25:00.61
Bill
I was going to stop at the, if this red river gorge on the way down there, maybe hit a short trail, hit that, do the rest on Saturday. But I wasn't thinking it's, I lose an hour going down there, you know, sits in, well, it's fucking Kentucky.
00:25:11.40
Mike
Right.
00:25:13.71
Bill
So I lose an hour and then i'm I'm backtracking all this different stuff. And with the way I'd have to go and kind of go a little bit out of the way, I'm like, ah, fuck it. I'm just going to, I'm just going to go there. I'm going to go, I'm going to do my grocery shopping. I'm going to get there.
00:25:27.11
Bill
I'm going to fucking relax. They have a grill. I'm going grill out some food. Oh, that's the other thing. Okay. Here, I'm going to take a chance. Second, this is third side note for the, for the episode. Okay.
00:25:36.03
Mike
right.
00:25:36.93
Bill
I am not going to have pizza on Friday.
00:25:39.21
Mike
Ah.
00:25:39.71
Bill
Okay.
00:25:40.04
Mike
All right.
00:25:40.40
Bill
Just let everyone know this by, by the time you're listening to this, I could be drunk, but I'm just.
00:25:44.95
Mike
Well, hey so are you getting pizza tomorrow?
00:25:50.20
Bill
No, nope.
00:25:50.97
Mike
Oh, wow.
00:25:52.18
Bill
And i i had thought about it, but then I ended up um everything.
00:25:52.68
Mike
Mm-hmm.
00:25:57.29
Bill
Well, you know, groceries. I mean, they're fucking expensive. And I usually get like deli chicken and whatever, but that went up to like $4.19 a pound.
00:26:00.18
Mike
Mm-hmm.
00:26:04.10
Bill
So I bought in Meijer. I bought one of the big family packs because it's like $2.75 a pound.
00:26:09.56
Mike
Mm-hmm.
00:26:09.67
Bill
So I'm like, oh, I got enough fucking chicken for the entire week until I leave. So I ended up buying food. So I got enough for the week. And um the thing of it is, is I could buy... Place I got to stop to get groceries in Berea, Kentucky.
00:26:23.68
Bill
Yeah, Berea, Kentucky.
00:26:24.23
Mike
Mm-hmm.
00:26:25.29
Bill
um I'm going to get groceries and stuff there. There's a Domino's there, but it's like an hour away from where I'm going. So if I get there fuck at 2 o'clock in the afternoon, I do shopping or buy my pizza before because I'll have ice cream, I'm sure.
00:26:38.60
Bill
And then whatever it is, I'm going to have a pizza sitting for, you know, fucking five hours.
00:26:42.14
Mike
Right.
00:26:42.21
Bill
You know, by the time I buy it, I'm like, I'm not fucking doing that. So, but on top of that, you know, I have, this is, this place that I'm going is kind of out in the middle of nowhere. It's got this pavilion area. I think they have like this, this brick fireplace and stuff in there, which I won't use, but they have a grill and picnic table and stuff down there.
00:26:58.10
Bill
I'm like, well, fuck it, man. I'm going to, I'm just going to grill some shit, you know?
00:27:00.81
Mike
Right.
00:27:00.97
Bill
So I'm going to, I'm going to take that. Not that, not that we haven't, you know, not eaten pizza on a Friday night, but.
00:27:06.17
Mike
Right. Yeah, it's happened occasionally. Right.
00:27:09.84
Bill
Yeah, out of, I was just thinking in my head. So how how many how many Fridays have we had in 15 years? Let's take 52 times 15. That's out of 700. That's just doing it to our anniversary date.
00:27:20.05
Mike
Uh-huh.
00:27:21.30
Bill
That's 780 Fridays. You think we've done what, 20, 25, 50? twenty five fifty
00:27:28.20
Mike
What, that we haven't?
00:27:28.74
Bill
How many Fridays? Yeah, I have not. 20? 20?
00:27:32.91
Mike
Oh, no, well way less than that.
00:27:35.47
Bill
at twenty
00:27:38.29
Mike
Yeah, maybe 15. right.
00:27:41.91
Bill
Yeah, well, I think, you know, like ah we went, Kathy's birthday that we surprised her at that one restaurant. We went we went out that night.
00:27:46.76
Mike
right
00:27:48.06
Bill
um I've been other places with people, you know, that you do something on a Friday night, whatever.
00:27:51.31
Mike
Sure. Right.
00:27:53.51
Bill
But even, so let's just say, even if it's been 20 out of 780, that's 97.5% of the time that we've had, or, know, figure we've had pizza.
00:27:59.15
Mike
Right.
00:28:00.59
Bill
I think be okay, seven point five percent of the time
00:28:04.96
Mike
Yes.
00:28:05.78
Bill
but we've had or you know figure we've had pizza i think i'll be okay so
00:28:09.31
Mike
Yeah. Yeah. Right.
00:28:09.98
Bill
I don't think I'm going to start drinking, especially... and I don't what i don and want to get... fucking lose my... I don't know, throw away my life in fucking Kentucky.
00:28:18.08
Mike
ha
00:28:18.78
Bill
yeah
00:28:20.02
Mike
I'll just make sure you make your bed and you're spiteful and you'll be fine. Two thirds of the way there.
00:28:23.64
Bill
oh um'm I'm already a little bit spiteful the fact that I can't but i can't you know go go hit a trail on on Friday. So um um i'm rolling I'm rolling in there with some spite.
00:28:30.28
Mike
Right. There you go.
00:28:33.05
Bill
I will make my bed. Always do.
00:28:35.20
Mike
Right.
00:28:35.43
Bill
So I'm good. I'm good to go.
00:28:36.70
Mike
Yeah, exactly.
00:28:37.06
Bill
So I don't...
00:28:38.00
Mike
Right. I mean, I plan on getting it tomorrow because, uh, yeah, I think, uh, we're going to go hang out with Angel and Tony at their place on Friday. Have a cookout.
00:28:46.12
Bill
oh that's nice.
00:28:47.06
Mike
Yeah.
00:28:47.09
Bill
Very nice.
00:28:47.86
Mike
Yeah. So, you know, right. Yeah.
00:28:52.04
Bill
tell them Tell them they got a cookie of pizza on the grill.
00:28:54.68
Mike
Right.
00:28:57.95
Bill
But yeah, like seriously, though, is that I mean, to begin with, when I thought about it, when i was because I map out, I mean, the the two things, the two main things I map out, well, three, I look for either a walt i i love for Walmart, Aldi, because I can get by i can get by it just Walmart. Walmart and Aldi I like because I get certain things from Aldi.
00:29:14.96
Bill
um But then I look for Domino's or like when I was in Arkansas, it was that little you know mom and pop type of pizza shop, which had great pizza, but it was fucking ridiculously expensive, but it was fine.
00:29:21.75
Mike
Right. Mm-hmm. Oh, yeah. Right.
00:29:27.86
Bill
you know was just a couple of times while I was down there and I don't mind local business, but...
00:29:29.87
Mike
Mm-hmm.
00:29:31.70
Bill
But yeah, shit, there's that this place in as I'm sitting here, my phone started buzzing. I see Airbnb little logo on there. The host for the place, she just texted me. So like sometimes a little bit, I just kind of saw the headline saying it's a little hard to find.
00:29:43.77
Bill
Looks like she texted me directions and whatever. And it's kind of out the middle of nowhere because they they say in their description, make sure you gas in your car, get groceries.
00:29:46.46
Mike
Mm-hmm.
00:29:51.57
Mike
but
00:29:53.12
Bill
But I don't think it's not like super fucking remote. But I mean, there's not like a grocery store five minutes away, you know. But i don't know.
00:29:59.09
Mike
Right.
00:30:00.01
Bill
It's not a big deal. Whatever. I like that.
00:30:01.57
Mike
Yeah.
00:30:02.00
Bill
I like being the middle of fucking nowhere. So I'm fine with it.
00:30:04.60
Mike
Good for you.
00:30:06.00
Bill
Yeah.
00:30:08.69
Bill
But yeah, umm I'm looking forward to I'm I looked at the weather. It's going to be fucking hotter than hell, probably 90 degrees on on Saturday.
00:30:13.26
Mike
Right. Mm-hmm.
00:30:14.53
Bill
But um I don't care. I'm just glad it's not raining. And, you know, that Red River Gorge is supposed to be there's. I'm going to need to. That's the wrong way to put it. I'm definitely going to want to come back or go back at some point because, I mean, there's a I i don't even think that this one trail that I want to go on one in itself, I think, is three miles, you know, which is I can do a three mile and then, you know a couple of small ones.
00:30:26.27
Mike
Yeah.
00:30:38.08
Mike
Yeah.
00:30:39.79
Bill
But I mean, some of these other ones, I mean, if all if I did all the ones I'd be walking for, like, fucking 15 miles on Saturday, it's not going to happen. It's just not going to fucking happen. So anyhow, anyhow, that's what that is. Okay.
00:30:52.75
Bill
um You know what? you want I'll tell you what. let's Let's throw a little bit of s spite out there for both of us. Are you ready? A little bit of spite?
00:30:58.84
Mike
I'm ready. Sure.
00:30:59.78
Bill
Okay. So um we've been very, very open. And I don't know, did you notice that I updated our thing about supporting our podcast over the last
00:31:08.61
Mike
i don't I don't know. Maybe.
00:31:10.16
Bill
I just, I changed it a little bit. um
00:31:12.31
Mike
Yeah.
00:31:12.90
Bill
And I even took out the part about buying our merchandise. I took that part out of there. People want to find their website, fine.
00:31:16.58
Mike
Okay. Right. Yeah.
00:31:18.03
Bill
Fuck them. Find the website. You know, I, no, seriously, give people some goddamn credit. I mean, I don't need to advertise all this shit.
00:31:23.46
Mike
right yeah
00:31:25.15
Bill
We have merchandise. We talk about it in our... you'll find it. Okay.
00:31:28.53
Mike
Yeah.
00:31:29.08
Bill
Um, but strictly was, I, I changed it and I, I changed the font a little bit on it where we, we don't want your money or we don't need your money type of thing. Um, and then, you know, did the whole thing about, you know, as opposed to other podcasts, same as I had before, blah, blah, blah.
00:31:43.69
Bill
Give us, you know, give us a rating. Um, everyone who's listening right now, if you haven't given us at least a star rating, please, please,
00:31:45.72
Mike
Yep.
00:31:51.68
Mike
Mm-hmm.
00:31:51.86
Bill
Because what it does is that literally, if even if what we do is mildly, not even entertaining, mildly useful.
00:32:00.74
Mike
Right?
00:32:00.90
Bill
Because I don't i mean i don't know, we we find ourselves fucking hilarious at the time.
00:32:01.22
Mike
Oh, of course.
00:32:04.30
Bill
but
00:32:07.25
Bill
But if what we're talking about is useful in any way, shape or form, possibly somebody else wants to hear it. So...
00:32:14.03
Mike
Right.
00:32:15.08
Bill
the The better ratings we have and better yet, Apple Podcasts, you can leave a comment, an actual review, or you can go on our website and do it. um That gives people the opportunity.
00:32:22.55
Mike
Mm-hmm.
00:32:24.47
Bill
It ranks us higher. So when people are looking for sobriety or recovery podcasts, I mean, fuck, Sober's in our goddamn name.
00:32:29.15
Mike
Mm-hmm. Right.
00:32:31.62
Bill
If people are looking for sober podcasts, it's more likely they'll find us. So...
00:32:35.19
Mike
Right.
00:32:35.59
Bill
And it's not as though we're, I mean, is it selfish? Maybe, but, um, is that, we're not really getting anything from it.
00:32:39.51
Mike
Right.
00:32:42.54
Bill
It's not like we're making millions because we're getting more listeners.
00:32:42.97
Mike
No. Mm-hmm.
00:32:46.58
Bill
Yeah. Like John Candy and, uh, in, uh, planes, trains, and automobiles. Oh, about a billion giant being a billionaire. Yeah. Us too. Us too, Mr. Candy.
00:32:55.34
Mike
um
00:32:55.73
Bill
yeah But, um, but yeah, so go on there. That's all we're asking because this is what I heard on, on a podcast the other day. And again, it's, it's somebody that we know, somebody that we, I think we respect.
00:33:06.59
Bill
I like their podcast, but these motherfuckers, uh,
00:33:07.14
Mike
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
00:33:10.84
Bill
I can't stand it. So this is the exact words. These donations talking about buy me a coffee, which is we have a link to it also.
00:33:16.53
Mike
Uh-huh.
00:33:17.43
Bill
But again, it's still there.
00:33:17.58
Mike
Well.
00:33:19.24
Bill
If you want to fucking search for it like our friend Tim did, go for it.
00:33:22.15
Mike
Mm-hmm.
00:33:22.60
Bill
Thank you, Tim. But we're going advertise it.
00:33:23.83
Mike
Right. No.
00:33:25.54
Bill
the These donations give us the resources to get the show into the ears of the new guy or the new girl.
00:33:30.13
Mike
Mm-hmm.
00:33:34.43
Bill
Really? Really?
00:33:41.10
Bill
I fucking hate that. I don't, I wish, I really wish it didn't bother me so much, but, um and um I'm going to ask you, because I don't, I can't figure out, I think I have a, just, I might have a clue, okay?
00:33:42.74
Mike
Yeah.
00:33:46.07
Mike
Mm-hmm.
00:33:53.51
Bill
But why, tell me or help me, help me realize why that bothers me so much.
00:33:54.00
Mike
Mm-hmm.
00:33:59.57
Bill
And people are fucking,
00:34:00.22
Mike
Well, I mean, there they're ah using guilt to further whatever the fuck they're trying to further. um Yeah, I don't know.
00:34:11.78
Mike
It's just, yeah, it's manipulative and um I don't know. Yeah, it's it's like preying on on, yeah, it's guilt, you know?
00:34:20.44
Bill
Right.
00:34:21.03
Mike
yeah and fuck that, man. um You're not a goddamn religion. Settle down.
00:34:26.62
Bill
Right.
00:34:27.51
Mike
ah You don't need to use guilt. oh Yes, i you know yeah of course, we would love to have somebody who's you know struggling, whatever, to get something good out of this nonsense that we do. Absolutely.
00:34:41.10
Mike
But we're not going to... We're not going to, you know, again, guilt people into trying to, well, if, you know, if you don't give us money, then we can't reach the new guy.
00:34:46.19
Bill
Right.
00:34:52.69
Mike
What? What?
00:34:53.89
Bill
yeah
00:34:54.66
Mike
no oh no, no, no, no. no no You know, is self-sufficient through our own.
00:35:00.77
Bill
Yeah. Self-supporting through our own contributions.
00:35:02.53
Mike
Yes, exactly.
00:35:04.66
Bill
And that's our fucking money, boys and voiceid girls.
00:35:06.35
Mike
Yeah. Exactly. and is
00:35:09.29
Bill
Yeah, you know, and and that that's, I think that's, ah it is, it's it's the guilt thing in that, because I, and it just popped into my head when you said that, and I'm not trying to guilt anyone by saying, leave us a review.
00:35:09.34
Mike
Exactly.
00:35:19.29
Bill
I'm giving the logical reason why to do it.
00:35:20.76
Mike
Yeah, right.
00:35:21.21
Bill
That's a, it's a free and easy way to do it. And if you don't want to leave us a review, that's fine.
00:35:23.51
Mike
Mm-hmm.
00:35:24.85
Bill
I mean, it doesn't, it doesn't matter.
00:35:25.60
Mike
Yeah.
00:35:26.68
Bill
I'm not necessarily a big review guy. um
00:35:29.25
Mike
Mm-hmm.
00:35:29.69
Bill
But like I go, I do on ah Google maps. I'm very active on there with these hiking things and stuff that I do.
00:35:34.31
Mike
Sure.
00:35:35.10
Bill
And even with restaurants, because they started to hit me with this, would you at least give it give it a star rating? So I do. um I mean, I've had like, it's ridiculous now in the last year. and just got an email update from Google.
00:35:46.45
Bill
I've had like 175,000 on pictures on all the ones that I, don't know how many pictures I posted, but it doesn't take any effort.
00:35:54.64
Mike
A lot. Right?
00:35:56.44
Bill
Yeah. But it's a, it's the ones that I post on Google. They'll pop, they'll pop up and they'll like, Hey, so you got 16 pictures here. Which ones you want to post? I never post any of the selfies, but it's just like, you know, six or seven and shoot them up there.
00:36:06.65
Bill
you know, that's all I got to do.
00:36:07.38
Mike
Right.
00:36:08.21
Bill
Um, But so, so that I'll do because I know that helps people. I like to have that if I'm looking at these hiking trails, you know, but it's an opportunity that the way to get, you could give anyone out there that's listening right now can give us literally could give us $1 million dollars or everyone can give us a thousand dollars each for the number of listeners we have.
00:36:14.17
Mike
Sure.
00:36:28.02
Mike
Right.
00:36:28.35
Bill
That will not thank you, by the way, we'll take it, I guess, you know, if you twist our arm.
00:36:34.66
Mike
I guess, right.
00:36:36.27
Bill
Okay. But
00:36:37.35
Mike
Well, I mean, you know, it said to, you know, in the reading, it said, you know, learn to give and receive.
00:36:43.53
Bill
Ah, yeah.
00:36:43.76
Mike
So, yes.
00:36:44.84
Bill
Let me see. I think I wrote that down. Yes, it does. yeah Give and receive.
00:36:48.12
Mike
Yes.
00:36:48.23
Bill
But that doesn't help get this fucking podcast in anyone's ears. All that does is put some money in our pocket.
00:36:52.76
Mike
No. Right.
00:36:54.30
Bill
You know, and yeah, granted, the... I don't even know what know The the worst worst case scenario, the honest thing for somebody to say, if somebody says, hey, if you want to donate, it will help offset costs of what we're doing.
00:37:06.54
Bill
If you want to donate because you appreciate what we're doing, here's a thank you.
00:37:08.75
Mike
Sure. Mm-hmm.
00:37:09.88
Bill
It's like a tip walking into a restaurant getting good service.
00:37:11.55
Mike
Yeah. Right.
00:37:12.67
Bill
If somehow we are servicing you well, just a tip, baby, you know.
00:37:12.74
Mike
Exactly.
00:37:16.23
Mike
Yeah.
00:37:19.23
Mike
yeah
00:37:20.57
Bill
But I don't know.
00:37:20.64
Mike
Yeah, yeah, that's it.
00:37:21.39
Bill
I don't know.
00:37:21.99
Mike
But yeah, exactly. Yeah, the whole, you know, if you exactly. Like, you know, if you don't give us, that's fucking, that's, hey, Jimmy Swagger just died. Okay.
00:37:34.17
Mike
Right.
00:37:34.44
Bill
yeah
00:37:34.45
Mike
If you, if you don't send us money. oh
00:37:38.99
Bill
God's coming to take me.
00:37:39.11
Mike
Right.
00:37:40.12
Bill
Right.
00:37:40.33
Mike
yeah Exactly. If I don't make this nut, God's going to take me away. Well, yeah, guess what?
00:37:45.91
Bill
right
00:37:47.11
Mike
He fucking ended up living to 90 and then he died anyway.
00:37:50.66
Bill
Right. Yeah. Yeah. Well, God, God took him at 90. So yeah, there it is.
00:37:54.33
Mike
Mm-hmm.
00:37:55.33
Bill
But you know, the the thing, and we, the other thing we've been open about is what, where, where we want to generate revenue from ultimately, and what we've, what we've attempted to do, not very hard, but um is we want to get advertisers. We don't want your money.
00:38:05.75
Mike
Mm-hmm.
00:38:06.15
Bill
We want advertisers money, you know, in that too, if, if somebody, if somebody, we get more listeners and more plays and all sorts of things, which just happens organically,
00:38:08.48
Mike
Right.
00:38:14.07
Mike
Right.
00:38:14.17
Bill
Um, if somebody advertises was that's the money that we'll take in a fucking heartbeat, you know, because then those people are giving us money for something they're getting in return, which I guess somebody else, I don't know.
00:38:18.56
Mike
Exactly. Mm-hmm.
00:38:24.67
Bill
I just, you I think you hit it right on the head. I don't think it needs any more explanation. It is.
00:38:28.22
Mike
Yeah.
00:38:28.35
Bill
It's, it's trying to guilt people into, um, if you don't give, we can't be here for the new guys.
00:38:33.48
Mike
Yeah.
00:38:33.60
Bill
So look at your, you're preventing somebody from getting sober.
00:38:37.32
Mike
Yeah. Right.
00:38:38.07
Bill
Give me money.
00:38:39.02
Mike
Fuck you.
00:38:40.06
Bill
Yeah, exactly.
00:38:40.07
Mike
Right.
00:38:40.62
Bill
Thank you. Fuck you and your goddamn donations.
00:38:41.76
Mike
Uh-huh.
00:38:45.22
Bill
So once again, going back to Tim, ah thank you, Tim, for for doing what you did. You gave us, and Tim gave us 25 bucks, whatever it was a couple months ago.
00:38:49.14
Mike
Mm-hmm. Right.
00:38:51.86
Bill
And ah we mentioned it because it's a big fucking deal.
00:38:52.25
Mike
Right.
00:38:54.05
Bill
Nobody, nobody does it because we tell people not to.
00:38:56.42
Mike
Right.
00:38:56.92
Bill
um
00:38:57.52
Mike
Yeah,
00:38:57.66
Bill
But what, yeah, when people do it, it's like, oh, holy shit. That's really fucking nice.
00:39:00.71
Mike
yeah it is.
00:39:00.82
Bill
That's really fucking nice.
00:39:01.35
Mike
And we appreciate it. And we, you know, we put it back into this thing.
00:39:02.92
Bill
Yeah.
00:39:04.86
Mike
We pay for Zencaster for another month or whatever. Right. You know, yeah, that's all.
00:39:08.90
Bill
Yes.
00:39:10.79
Mike
That's all.
00:39:11.76
Bill
Yeah. It's in one, one way or the other, Tim, no offense to you, but if you didn't give us the 25 bucks, we still would have showed up the next week, you know?
00:39:17.87
Mike
That's right.
00:39:18.94
Bill
So if, yeah.
00:39:19.31
Mike
We would. Yes. Right. And reach out to the new guy. We don't fucking need money to do that.
00:39:22.80
Bill
yeah Right. So again, I'm just going to give a good hearty and you can too, Mike, if you'd like a good hearty, fuck you to anyone out there that, that is, yeah.
00:39:33.01
Bill
Making people feel guilty.
00:39:33.55
Mike
that uses those tactics to God.
00:39:35.89
Bill
Yeah.
00:39:36.92
Mike
Yeah, exactly. We're not fucking televangelists. We're not pod evangelists. We're, we're not any kind of evangelists, or you know, we're, we're fucking a couple of drunks who are saying, Hey man, we did the work and it works for us.
00:39:47.09
Bill
A
00:39:49.38
Bill
yeah
00:39:51.35
Mike
If you do the work, it'll work for you. That's all money's got nothing to fucking do with it.
00:39:58.05
Bill
pot of Angelus.
00:39:58.90
Mike
Yes.
00:39:59.24
Bill
I don't know why that sounds so fucking funny, but I've been giggling about that since you said it. Yes. Hello. Mike and Bill, pot of Angelus.
00:40:06.78
Mike
That's right. Right.
00:40:09.41
Bill
Oh, shit. Okay, one one quick thing then we can take a break. But so um again, back to back to Rob Lowe. And I i i really, i just, here's the thing with with Rob Lowe. I like him as an individual. I listen to both of his audio books.
00:40:22.71
Bill
Interesting life and I've i've liked his movies. so I just, I enjoy him as ah as a human being and as an individual. and Plus he's one of us, you know?
00:40:29.58
Mike
right
00:40:29.65
Bill
Um, but he's, I, and I'm still back in like 2020 and 21, I think in his episodes, but, um, he's really good as a podcaster, great conversation, kind of like Mark, very natural, um, true conversationalist with, with everyone.
00:40:45.49
Bill
Um, so, I mean, I've been listening to a lot of those and so he had have Campbell on, which I mean, she's interesting enough.
00:40:45.57
Mike
Mm-hmm.
00:40:50.97
Bill
She was in a show that I watched, um, Lincoln lawyers based off the movie, um, don't know, a couple of years ago.
00:40:56.53
Mike
Okay.
00:40:56.70
Bill
So that might've even been while she was on there promoting it. But, um The funny thing was he was talking about something about social media and she said that she's not really on social media much because this I thought was funny. She said she's terrified of social media. He's like, why are you terrified?
00:41:12.87
Bill
And she said she's afraid of posting something, um anything, regardless of what it is and having somebody jump all over her about it.
00:41:20.00
Mike
ah
00:41:20.25
Bill
You know, again, whether it's a good thing, bad thing, blah, blah, blah. And I'm like, well, that's the, you know, it's kind of the nature of it.
00:41:22.81
Mike
Right.
00:41:25.03
Bill
But, you know, it made me think.
00:41:25.10
Mike
Mm-hmm.
00:41:26.64
Bill
And, you know, through the time frame, because we've been doing this podcast for three and a half years. We've been on Instagram, same amount of time, you know, and we've had, i would say, slight speed bumps in our social media road, you know, where a couple of people jump up.
00:41:33.31
Mike
Mm-hmm.
00:41:40.06
Mike
Mm-hmm.
00:41:41.34
Bill
We get this this string for about a month when people were jumping up. And I know we got complained about because, you know, Instagram was, you flagging us on just about every goddamn thing I was posting, um which is fine.
00:41:51.51
Mike
Right. Yes. Yes.
00:41:52.65
Bill
I mean, that actually made me happy, you know.
00:41:54.26
Mike
right
00:41:55.60
Bill
Um, but all in all, um, we take very little shit for all the shit that we post, you know, and all the shit that we talk about on here. Um, and that was the other thing.
00:42:06.07
Bill
And I'm not, I, maybe I am asking, um, I'm not really complaining about it, but, um, I mean, have people just come thankfully come to, a you know, these guys are who they are.
00:42:16.17
Bill
Does it mean we're, we're real?
00:42:16.61
Mike
yes
00:42:17.77
Bill
Does it mean we're down to earth? I mean, is it a compliment that nobody fucks with us? I mean, I don't know.
00:42:26.02
Mike
Um, yeah, I, I, I take it as a compliment.
00:42:29.20
Bill
Right.
00:42:29.46
Mike
Right.
00:42:29.70
Bill
Yeah.
00:42:29.78
Mike
Yeah. You know, we, exactly. Oh shit. It's them. That's what they are.
00:42:33.52
Bill
yeah
00:42:34.22
Mike
Yeah. fine That's fine.
00:42:36.14
Bill
yeah I know, because it's some of the things that I post these days that I didn't even think about it.
00:42:37.77
Mike
I,
00:42:41.51
Bill
I mean, i there's there's some really raw ass shit that I don't post.
00:42:45.17
Mike
right.
00:42:45.30
Bill
um You know, but I still I did. The thing of it is, and I think that the other thing that just crossed my mind is that um things that we don't do. Well, first of all, we don't shame people into guilt people.
00:42:55.36
Mike
yeah and
00:42:56.85
Bill
Um, we, we don't, um, we don't ridicule. I mean, we, we get on, we get on topics and the worst people that we probably ridicule are people who deserve it, like fucking politicians or pot evangelists, you know, things like that.
00:43:05.95
Mike
Sure.
00:43:08.32
Mike
Yes.
00:43:10.04
Bill
But, um, we don't go after, you know, races of people or, you know, sexual orientations, anything like that.
00:43:13.98
Mike
but yeah
00:43:15.84
Bill
We don't get, we don't get that.
00:43:17.01
Mike
Well, it's because it's not who we are.
00:43:18.94
Bill
Exactly. that's That's not who we are. um And, you know, the worst thing we're talking about is, you know, it's a penis joke or it's this or that. But so I think we're we're crude, but not cruel.
00:43:25.72
Mike
Right.
00:43:29.32
Bill
Is that?
00:43:29.86
Mike
Mm-hmm.
00:43:30.42
Bill
Okay.
00:43:30.41
Mike
Absolutely. Yeah.
00:43:31.78
Bill
Okay. All right. So I don't know.
00:43:33.19
Mike
Right.
00:43:34.27
Bill
I mean, I don't necessarily in most times, I'm not trying to like pat ourselves on the back or anything like that, but it just, as soon as she said that, I'm like, God, that's, that's fucking amazing that we don't get, we don't get beat up more and I'm, I'm happy about it.
00:43:46.10
Bill
But you know, on top of it, when we do get beat up, it's fucking hilarious um because it's usually just fucking ridiculous.
00:43:46.45
Mike
Mm-hmm.
00:43:49.40
Mike
Exactly. Mm-hmm.
00:43:54.34
Bill
And we're not doing it. We're not like criticizing anyone or like, you know, we're not trying to shame anyone or anything. um i don't know, unless we're trying to shame somebody for using a fucking dildo, which, you know, or a vibrator.
00:44:04.87
Bill
And believe me, no shaming.
00:44:05.08
Mike
yeah No shame in that.
00:44:07.03
Bill
No, please grab it. I'll sit down and watch. yeah
00:44:11.20
Mike
Yep.
00:44:12.56
Bill
And on that note, what do you say? We take a break.
00:44:16.12
Mike
All right. Well, we're going to pass the basket and we'll be right back after these words from our sponsors.
00:44:30.18
Bill
All right, everyone. Welcome back.
00:44:34.96
Bill
ah You had me giggling there for a second there past the basket.
00:44:37.81
Mike
yeah that's right
00:44:39.58
Bill
yeah Give your money, bitches. Yeah. yeah And that's that's the thing, too. You know, even in ah in an AA meeting, I've never felt, um you know, and in in an AA meeting, if ah for for those of you that listen to us that that have never actually been, if you were are are in different type of recovery, um yeah, if you've been to church before, the basket gets passed around, AA does the same thing.
00:44:58.51
Mike
mm-hmm yep
00:44:59.92
Bill
um But, I mean, i don't think that alcoholics and I can tell you about it. This comedian too in a minute. Cause I almost just said something, but I'll i'll let his words say that part. But, um, so AA, again, like Mike said before, you know, self-supporting with our own contribution.
00:45:13.93
Bill
So it's our members and of the group, us as members, um, we donate to meetings and that's how the meetings run, you know?
00:45:14.30
Mike
Right.
00:45:20.19
Mike
Yeah.
00:45:20.57
Bill
Um,
00:45:20.59
Mike
um be you're looking You're talking to the guy who passes the basket in his home group. I am the co-treasurer of my home group and have been for a couple years now. And yeah, I'm the guy that gets up and passes the basket.
00:45:33.39
Bill
Right. Yeah. And it's, but it is, it's a, it's a matter of, um you know, it's, it's people, you know, that, that are supporting themselves in the same thing.
00:45:41.34
Mike
Mm-hmm.
00:45:41.47
Bill
And I suppose, I mean, the church is, is, I don't know. It's, it's a whole different, I don't even get into it, but, um, so, but in AA meetings, yes, pass the basket.
00:45:45.97
Mike
the
00:45:49.07
Bill
So when Mike said that, obviously us, you know, talking about not, not taking people's money and then we're going pass the basket during our commercial.
00:45:53.11
Mike
and see But we're going to run commercials.
00:45:55.86
Bill
So.
00:45:58.61
Bill
Yeah, but it's just it's for our website. then you know the Literally, um the the the funny part is with Spotify, and um seriously, we get i mean it's it's probably increased a little bit.
00:46:08.81
Mike
Hmm.
00:46:09.21
Bill
And when I say increased and I'd have to, I'd have to look.
00:46:10.73
Mike
no Pennies.
00:46:12.52
Bill
Yeah. I know. I mean, it's where we probably make seven, eight, nine bucks a month now.
00:46:14.87
Mike
Couple quarters.
00:46:18.88
Bill
Okay.
00:46:18.91
Mike
Right. Ooh, look out.
00:46:19.66
Bill
um I know where, where it used to be like nine or $10 for, you know, every couple of months or every few months.
00:46:21.00
Mike
Mm-hmm.
00:46:26.34
Bill
And all that it is, is it, I don't, I don't know that, um you know, the, I don't think we've had done anything differently, but I don't know. Maybe it's how, how Spotify is distributing, you know, our podcast. So um it's maybe it's views and partial listens and all these different things, whatever they're doing fine.
00:46:36.32
Mike
Mm-hmm.
00:46:40.65
Mike
Sure. Yeah.
00:46:41.55
Bill
But it's just, ah it all goes into our, into our sober, not mature bank account. And, you know,
00:46:45.30
Mike
That's right. Somebody's got to pay for this coffee.
00:46:47.72
Bill
yeah Yeah, for all the, you know, hundreds of dollars in bills that we pay out every once in a while, I do an expense report like I did over the, you know, this past weekend and, you know, kick some of that money back out of there.
00:46:51.76
Mike
Wow. Yep, right.
00:46:56.19
Mike
so
00:46:58.73
Bill
But yeah, we've, I don't think we've, we've never had any, any we've had, I think at the most in our bank account, I think we had $600 at one point.
00:47:06.48
Mike
wow
00:47:06.98
Bill
um
00:47:09.58
Bill
And I think that was before we went to that retreat and then the $300 that went Yeah.
00:47:12.32
Mike
ah ye right
00:47:15.84
Bill
You know, but it's just fucking is what it is. this We do this because, you know, the last thing I'll say, we do this because we want to. When we don't want to anymore, we will let all of you know, and then we're going to ride into the fucking sunset and leave you to listen to people are trying to take your money.
00:47:23.40
Mike
Mm-hmm. Right.
00:47:30.17
Bill
So there.
00:47:30.63
Mike
Right. Mm-hmm. Well, are we?
00:47:33.78
Bill
All right. So what's a couple of other things? Oh, yeah. yeah um Keep it simple. Oh, shit. Well, this was that's OK. This was this was step six. But i don't know let me see if i asked you about this one.
00:47:45.74
Bill
I mean, we're past the step six thing. But either way, this got to wrap into it.
00:47:48.00
Mike
Mm-hmm. well are we
00:47:52.37
Bill
I'm sorry. We are past the sixth month. I said that the wrong way.
00:47:54.51
Mike
Ah, yes. Just make it sure.
00:47:56.35
Bill
yeah Jesus Christ.
00:47:58.36
Mike
I want to clarify.
00:47:59.01
Bill
Look.
00:47:59.44
Mike
Wait.
00:48:00.67
Bill
No, it's you busted.
00:48:00.90
Mike
So I...
00:48:02.92
Bill
You busted me out rightfully. So thank you.
00:48:04.89
Mike
Right.
00:48:05.08
Bill
Thank you.
00:48:05.17
Mike
So all our character defects are gone now.
00:48:07.80
Bill
Man, I mean, i I completed like like I told Joe, i I completed six and seven.
00:48:08.77
Mike
so so
00:48:12.49
Bill
Didn't you hear my story?
00:48:12.80
Mike
ah was
00:48:14.00
Bill
yeah All right. So keep it simple. and This was about step six. We got ready to give up our shortcomings in step seven. We ask our higher power to remove them. So this is a step seven one. I'm sorry.
00:48:24.34
Mike
Mm-hmm.
00:48:24.37
Bill
um There is one catch. It says we humbly ask our higher power to remove them. Okay. Now in my parentheses, what does, and um we may have talked about this probably even last year, but number one part of my question, what does humble mean to you or what is being humble mean to you? How do you, how would you describe being humble?
00:48:45.91
Mike
I am no longer the center of the universe.
00:48:49.44
Bill
ah
00:48:49.70
Mike
ah I am, ah yes, you know, i I am but a humble servant. I do not govern anything. um Yeah, I'm, you know, i'm I'm here to serve. i'm yeah Yes, I have skills. Yes, i and I need to use them for the betterment of others.
00:49:05.83
Mike
That's, to me, what being humble is.
00:49:09.20
Bill
Right. My dad's got an awesome set of tools. I can fix it.
00:49:12.42
Mike
Yeah, right. Yeah.
00:49:15.06
Bill
Yeah. All my friends gave us an awesome set of tools and we we can fix things now.
00:49:18.13
Mike
Mm-hmm. We can help people fix things.
00:49:22.49
Bill
Yeah, but I like that. I mean, not the center of the universe. Yeah, we're not we're not the main thing anymore.
00:49:27.15
Mike
Yeah.
00:49:27.43
Bill
um And yeah, just accepting being, um you know, not necessarily having to, um i don't know, just being part of the crowd, not not the one that's, you know, on the on stage or not the one that's leading the group.
00:49:34.58
Mike
Yeah.
00:49:38.12
Bill
I mean, I don't mind. You know, I can i can lead people if if I need to, but...
00:49:40.76
Mike
Sure.
00:49:41.66
Bill
Right.
00:49:41.65
Mike
what dad Yeah, that's just it. I mean, it's not... ah To me, it's not being humiliated. It's, be yeah you know, yes, I have worth and yes, i but I need to use it for the betterment of others, not for the better betterment of myself.
00:49:48.51
Bill
Right.
00:49:57.48
Mike
And yet that's being humble.
00:49:57.69
Bill
Right.
00:49:59.90
Mike
Yes, i again, i have so I have a certain set of skills and I can use them. um I have worth, i you know, but I need to... use those things for other people.
00:50:11.01
Mike
And, and, you know, it's a wonderful by-product. My life is better and, you know, all that good stuff. But yes, um, yes, you know, but it's not about me anymore.
00:50:22.07
Mike
It's not all about me, you know, and again, I do this stuff cause I am selfish and self-centered.
00:50:23.79
Bill
right
00:50:26.54
Mike
Uh, you know, I do this stuff cause I do want a better life and I do want to be happy and I do all that, you know, whatever. Um, but I know the key to the happiness and in having that better life is doing things for others.
00:50:38.44
Mike
And still doesn't make sense and it still doesn't add up and I'm still going to fucking do it.
00:50:44.70
Bill
Yeah. Once again, and we we talk about it all the time. You know, fucking AA math. You know, you just give and give and give, which is which is perfect. That's what we were taught to do. And then, you know, you get the same, if not more, in return.
00:50:54.97
Bill
More than you ever would have expected in return.
00:50:55.62
Mike
Right.
00:50:57.61
Bill
And you gave all this shit away. You keep shoveling all this stuff away. Like, here, take this. here's um All these things I have. Take them. And people are like, no take this.
00:51:05.46
Mike
Out.
00:51:06.60
Bill
And it's a truckload back at you. it's
00:51:08.47
Mike
No.
00:51:08.83
Bill
Yeah, it's crazy. it doesn't It doesn't make any sense. But um But yeah, I mean, on on top of that, too, I mean, just in general, like you just said that, um you know, not being humiliated because a lot of people look at humility and humiliated as the same like the same concept, which it isn't, you know.
00:51:21.72
Mike
ah No.
00:51:23.86
Bill
um I mean, us sitting back and mean, realizing that, you know we we can shut our mouths. We don't have to be center of attention. We're there to to help and to serve others, as you put as you put it, um you know, but that doesn't make us it doesn't mean that we're less sad.
00:51:37.15
Bill
It just means that, like you just said, it's not all about me anymore.
00:51:37.96
Mike
no
00:51:41.32
Bill
Um, in the selfishness itself centered part, I huge, I love that so much. You, and you, you say it all the time and it's so true, you know, but it's, it's not in a bad way, you know, because I mean, all these different things and right.
00:51:48.38
Mike
Mm-hmm.
00:51:52.16
Mike
Right.
00:51:55.19
Bill
So I want to go. And like you said, I want to travel. I can't travel if I'm not sober. um I want to be around my my kids.
00:52:00.35
Mike
Mm-mm.
00:52:01.97
Bill
I can't be around my kids if I'm drinking.
00:52:04.08
Mike
Right.
00:52:04.24
Bill
um I sure as fuck can't be around my grandson. And I love that little shit. you know
00:52:08.31
Mike
Mm-hmm.
00:52:08.38
Bill
um i just I can't do any of these things that that I really want to do and that I like and that I enjoy um if I'm drinking. I just can't. you know So it's like, well, I guess guess I can't drink if I want to do all these things.
00:52:22.58
Bill
Oh, well.
00:52:23.81
Mike
Right. Yeah.
00:52:25.75
Bill
yeah Yeah, so this is actually another side thought that I had. and This was it was kind of funny. It was that earlier today when, you know, again, we're we're talking about, you know, obviously this holiday shit. And like you said, um you know, obviously not having to, you know, again, at the end of the day, having to go for a drink or whatever.
00:52:43.46
Bill
All these times when it comes up, especially summertime, but even in in the wintertime, you know, it comes up in these holiday weekends.
00:52:43.46
Mike
Mm-hmm.
00:52:49.39
Bill
I still I get that that feeling that almost that party feeling, you know, it's it's still in me.
00:52:53.21
Mike
Mm-hmm.
00:52:54.34
Bill
You know, I don't want to go out and booze it up.
00:52:54.72
Mike
Sure.
00:52:55.98
Bill
But, um you know, I mean, I'm I'm ready to go. I just want to go fucking I want to go on my trip. You know, i don't want to have to work tomorrow.
00:53:01.23
Mike
Right. Yeah.
00:53:02.71
Bill
want to fucking mail it in and just be done, you know.
00:53:02.99
Mike
Mm-hmm. right yeah
00:53:05.89
Bill
um So it's the same thing, but in different circumstances. But here's my question. And I thought about this. i Both of us have talked about the fact that if. you know, gosh forbid, either one of us decides to start drinking again.
00:53:18.11
Bill
Okay. Do you think, um, I don't know if we've ever talked about this specifically. Do you think that you would try to maintain the life that you have now? I mean, right now, your job, your house, um, Chris, everything like that, would you try, or would you just run off and just disappear?
00:53:29.54
Mike
Oh, he um no, if I was delusional enough to pick up a drink again, I'd be delusional enough to try to fucking balance everything and keep it all.
00:53:41.15
Mike
And still, yeah, yeah, yeah, I probably would for a bit.
00:53:43.19
Bill
Right.
00:53:44.57
Mike
Absolutely. Oh, I could handle it. If I can handle a drink, I can handle a drink and everything that I have right now.
00:53:48.11
Bill
Right.
00:53:52.17
Mike
Yeah, id buy thankfully, I'm not that delusional today, and I know that that's a fucking huge load of bullshit.
00:53:53.01
Bill
yeah
00:53:59.21
Bill
Right.
00:53:59.33
Mike
um But yeah, I'm i'm sure if if I got to the point where having a drink would be ah good idea. um Yeah, at that point, I'd be so fucking out of my mind that, yeah, I'm sure I would try to maintain some shit for a while.
00:54:17.95
Bill
Right. Yeah. And you know what? um And that was one of the things I usually don't think about these questions too much, you know, before I ask them and I didn't write that down.
00:54:23.64
Mike
Mm-hmm. Right.
00:54:24.89
Bill
It just popped into my head again.
00:54:26.35
Mike
Yeah.
00:54:26.37
Bill
But, um you know, I thought about I'm like, so part of me, I realized that um um I wouldn't try to come back necessarily and and be sober again. Because, I mean, I know I feel my mindset.
00:54:35.70
Mike
Mm-hmm.
00:54:37.11
Bill
I think that, it you know, again, this this collision course with, you know, with hell would happen pretty goddamn quickly.
00:54:43.08
Mike
Oh, yeah.
00:54:43.22
Bill
um But, yeah, I mean, I I'm pretty sure I would I would. exactly what you just said.
00:54:49.45
Mike
Mm-hmm.
00:54:49.70
Bill
If I got, that's what I was trying to figure out. If I got to that point, would I, would I be just, would it be a complete amount of buckets where I'm just like, you know I'm packing up my car and I'm going and I'm just whatever, you know, disappear or figure out, you know what?
00:54:51.91
Mike
Mm-hmm.
00:54:57.83
Mike
Mm-hmm. Right.
00:55:01.57
Bill
um
00:55:02.11
Mike
Mm-hmm.
00:55:02.32
Bill
If I do that, then I'd limit myself. So yeah, let's, let's try. Let's see if I can balance this thing.
00:55:06.57
Mike
Yeah. Yeah.
00:55:08.21
Bill
Yeah.
00:55:08.80
Mike
Yeah.
00:55:09.73
Bill
yeah That's ah which I mean, we, we know right now, like you said, but the key there, you said, if I was delusional enough,
00:55:15.98
Mike
Uh-huh.
00:55:17.84
Bill
To where a drink sounded like a good idea, why wouldn't it sound like a great idea to try to balance it all?
00:55:21.01
Mike
Right.
00:55:23.38
Mike
Exactly. I can fucking keep everything. I can have this and that. No, I can't have any of it.
00:55:32.72
Bill
i I'm special. I'm just, I'm not like, I'm like everyone else.
00:55:34.50
Mike
Right. Oh, yeah. Well, yeah, again, you know, I would be back to where I was before. And that's exactly where I was before. can fucking handle it. I will, you know, I can i can do it all.
00:55:47.74
Mike
No, I can't.
00:55:49.02
Bill
Right. Yeah. I don't know. I just i like i've I've said before, I mean, it's just ah even if even if I could maintain that for any amount of time. um I mean, I mean, I couldn't I couldn't imagine I that my job isn't like really difficult, but.
00:56:06.03
Bill
um I have to be on my toes, you know, because the things that I'm trying to talk about and explain to people, I mean, these are again, it's not rocket science, but it's these are businesses and business owners.
00:56:08.20
Mike
Right? Right?
00:56:15.73
Mike
Right?
00:56:16.55
Bill
And in our our manager says it a perfect way, which which I completely 100 percent understand. um a lot of these these folks that we're dealing with, these small to medium sized businesses, they're really good at whatever thing they're doing, you know.
00:56:29.72
Mike
Sure.
00:56:30.83
Bill
And they're not really good at maybe the outside stuff. Okay.
00:56:34.25
Mike
Mm-hmm.
00:56:34.97
Bill
So, you know, if you meet some of the most talented people that can build anything, fix anything, you know, create this great art or whatever, they may not be the best when it comes to, you know, the, the mundane book work, you know, maybe take a professional athlete, you know, somebody that's really good at a professional baseball player.
00:56:44.04
Mike
Mm-hmm.
00:56:48.16
Mike
Right.
00:56:51.76
Mike
Mm-hmm.
00:56:54.06
Bill
mean, they've got attorneys and managers and all sorts of things.
00:56:54.12
Mike
Right. Yeah.
00:56:56.32
Bill
I'm not saying they're unintelligent people,
00:56:58.55
Mike
Hmm.
00:56:58.69
Bill
um You know, but they're probably not, maybe they're not good at that. So there's there's a lot of explaining that I have to do to people. I'm not dumbing it down, but kind of putting it into layman's terms for people, you know, and and I don't think I could do that.
00:57:07.14
Mike
Yeah. Yeah, sure. Walk them through the process.
00:57:12.85
Bill
Right. Right. And I don't, I don't think I could do that. And, and I still, I get irritated at some of these motherfuckers on the phone to begin with, but I hold my tongue and that God, how long would it take for me to not hold my tongue, you know?
00:57:25.11
Mike
Mm-hmm.
00:57:26.08
Bill
And then, or, you know, just be, just be fucking wrecked, you know, and, and just, I mean, be out of it. Or I end up in a fucking Airbnb, I'll load it up and bust something up in an Airbnb and
00:57:32.59
Mike
Mm-hmm.
00:57:37.48
Mike
ah Burn a fucker down.
00:57:38.94
Bill
yeah yeah or Or bust myself up. Then I'd be drinking and hiking.
00:57:41.97
Mike
Yeah. Right.
00:57:43.05
Bill
I'd be drinking and hiking on the side of a goddamn mountain all fucking lit up.
00:57:43.82
Mike
There you go. That'll turn out just fine. right
00:57:47.56
Bill
Yeah, you thought I hurt myself bad on a goddamn coffee table. Put me drunk on a fucking mountain.
00:57:50.89
Mike
since there you go
00:57:54.92
Bill
And then, so I'm laying at the bottom of the mountain.
00:57:55.14
Mike
that'll turn out just fine
00:57:58.47
Bill
Just light me up. ah and Fucking light me up. Keep my ashes there.
00:58:04.78
Bill
Speaking of that real quick, and this will be a, this will be a probably a one or two minute conversation. I just want to tell you what my doctor said today. So I went in for my follow-up appointment.
00:58:10.34
Mike
Uh-huh. Yeah.
00:58:12.19
Bill
Um, and, and I've been looking at, think I told you, I mean, I could tell that everything was healing up.
00:58:12.38
Mike
Mm-hmm.
00:58:15.83
Bill
Well, it seemed to be going in the right direction, um, doing everything they've been telling following directions.
00:58:18.38
Mike
Right.
00:58:20.83
Bill
Right.
00:58:21.41
Mike
Mm.
00:58:21.57
Bill
Um, So I go in there and I had an eight o'clock appointment. I took two hours of PTO just in case. And I'm glad I did. Cause again, I had sit around and wait, which again was fine. um But he comes in and the first, first of all, this doctor, he's a fucking goofball. It varies. It extrovert comes in and he's always like, Hey, how you doing? Kind a handshake type of guy. Yeah.
00:58:39.97
Bill
You know, but but fun. I mean, he's a nice guy. So um the nurse had everything prepared and she had already numbed the wound in case he had to, you know, kind of do the debriding again, which is the, you know, get rid of dead skin.
00:58:48.79
Mike
Right. Yeah.
00:58:50.83
Bill
So it had a like a cause over that with the laticate or whatever on there. And he he takes the the gauze off and he he stands up and he's like, now that is a good looking wound.
00:59:02.77
Mike
Yeah.
00:59:04.44
Bill
And i just I just started laughing. I'm like, it's a good looking wound. And he's like, my God, he goes, like he goes it's it's healing really well. He goes, I've done this for a long time. And he goes, hey that's a good looking wound. He goes, it's, you know.
00:59:14.32
Mike
So basically he said, nice gash.
00:59:17.24
Bill
yeah Yes, he did.
00:59:19.07
Mike
He he he he he.
00:59:20.15
Bill
Nice hole. Yeah.
00:59:21.66
Mike
who
00:59:22.66
Bill
yeah yeah But dumb it's like 80% because he's like, you know, then he's describing it to me. He goes, you he goes you see like that this part's the redness in it, whatever. He goes, that's good. That's new growth and whatever in there.
00:59:33.77
Bill
And then, you know, so we did all this different stuff. And he's like, he goes, I'm scraping away. And he goes, up basically, i'm I'm causing an acute wound. And he said the reason for that, he goes, um he goes, plus I got to, you know, do this. And so skin keeps moving and.
00:59:45.89
Bill
um He goes, I'm basically triggering your body to say, okay, ah we're wounded. Come back out and heal me type of thing.
00:59:51.16
Mike
All right.
00:59:51.93
Bill
um So, I mean, it was it was great. um Anyhow, um I clearly have been doing the right things, which made me feel good. And I could see it. It was just that, I mean, I don't necessarily need, um I don't know.
01:00:03.03
Bill
I don't need this pat on the back and, hey, good job there. But when it comes to shit like this, you know, basically I got my attaboy from my doctor.
01:00:06.38
Mike
ah hu
01:00:10.61
Mike
all right
01:00:11.08
Bill
Yeah. But yeah, good looking wound.
01:00:15.92
Bill
ah You're fucking funny. isn said You are funny. But yeah, so it's on it's on the mend, which is a good thing.
01:00:21.98
Mike
Good. Mm-hmm.
01:00:23.14
Bill
All right. So um right so i don't i don't think id why I don't think I did this one. and This is from Keep It Simple. um do i Keep It Simple said, do I use words in a kind way?
01:00:33.63
Bill
Do I treat words as a powerful gift? Do my words make the world better or worse for those who hear me speak? Okay.
01:00:40.71
Mike
v
01:00:41.66
Bill
So, um, and I'm just going I'll qualify this maybe for both of us. Um, I'm sure everyone, including us, you know, you got your days, you maybe your good days and your, maybe your kind of days.
01:00:51.54
Mike
Oh, yeah.
01:00:52.98
Bill
Okay.
01:00:53.01
Mike
Uh-huh.
01:00:53.71
Bill
But do you agree with that? I mean, do you, do you think you use your words in a kind way as a powerful gift? And do you think your words at least don't make it worse, the world worse?
01:01:03.47
Mike
I certainly try.
01:01:04.94
Bill
Okay.
01:01:04.99
Mike
um but don't always succeed, but... But, yeah, i and I certainly... um um filter myself far more than I used to.
01:01:16.15
Bill
Right.
01:01:17.89
Mike
um you know, um, I, I take, uh, you know, if it's, and there's very little, that's very important. Um, but if something is important and, and I'm, you know, having a conversation about something that is important, which again, doesn't happen very often.
01:01:37.30
Mike
Um, Yeah, you know, I measure my words. I think about what I'm going to say. I think about how it's going to be received. um Yeah, you know, i I certainly try much more than I used to. um It used to be, you know, I'm going to fucking tell you what's on my mind and I really don't care because it's my words and my thoughts and they're the most important thing in the fucking world.
01:01:57.53
Mike
ah But not anymore. um But yeah, I do try to... If it's, you know, again, it's very rare because there isn't anything that's all that important.
01:02:09.86
Mike
um
01:02:09.95
Bill
Right.
01:02:10.58
Mike
But yeah, if it is, I definitely try to put it in a way that's going to be beneficial to others.
01:02:20.14
Bill
Yeah. And I mean, if I if I had to compare, you know, the how I um how I used kind words before and now, all I would have to do is have done it once in my life since I got sober and it would be an improvement um because I don't think I not that I never use kind words, but I never had a filter when I had some when I had some shit to say, you know, um I never held back ever.
01:02:28.33
Mike
Okay.
01:02:33.84
Mike
Right.
01:02:40.56
Mike
Right. Absolutely. Mm-hmm.
01:02:42.32
Bill
I never fucking held back ever about anything.
01:02:45.08
Mike
Right.
01:02:45.28
Bill
um And there are there are plenty. I know there are plenty times, like you said, the thoughts in my head are still all all kinds of fucked up famous words from my friend Mike.
01:02:52.86
Mike
Mm-hmm.
01:02:55.67
Bill
And I love them because it's true, you know.
01:02:56.58
Mike
Yes. Yes.
01:02:58.91
Bill
And I can't tell you the the number of times, like even even sitting in the doctor's office today, you know, I took two hours, but my point was with doing that, I'm like, okay, I'm going plan on on starting at 10 a.m. I wanted to give myself enough time, you know, for the appointment.
01:03:11.44
Bill
um But I figured I'll get back here and I could just relax a little bit have something, you know, Apple, do whatever, organize some stuff, you know, for my trip. And, um you know, so I had this plan and I'm going to be that long. I'll have a good hour to fuck around, you know.
01:03:23.46
Bill
So the longer I'm sitting there, I'm getting irritated, you know, and I'm like, this is so fucking ridiculous. You plan for this, you dumb fuck. You know, you literally plan for this.
01:03:29.10
Mike
Right.
01:03:31.06
Bill
So what's going to happen is that you're going to have, i don't know, maybe a half hour, 45 minutes when you get back to the house versus a full hour.
01:03:37.00
Mike
Mm-hmm.
01:03:38.72
Bill
What does it fucking matter? You know, um but I was stewing and not that I would have snapped at anyone, but under a different circumstance, you know, like where is this fucking doctor?
01:03:40.24
Mike
Right.
01:03:48.24
Bill
My appointment was at eight.
01:03:49.66
Mike
Right.
01:03:49.69
Bill
It's 10 to nine. Where the fuck is he? You know? Because he wasn't, he wasn't there right away, you know, um but, but I know that they had mentioned when I set the appointment, you know, the only, the only thing that would make him late, he sometimes works the yeah ER and stuff like that.
01:04:01.66
Bill
So I don't think he was sitting at home, you know, with his dick in his hand, drinking coffee.
01:04:05.32
Mike
Mm-hmm.
01:04:06.68
Bill
know, maybe he was, but I mean,
01:04:07.78
Mike
Yeah. What difference does it make?
01:04:08.82
Bill
ok Yeah, it's like, okay, Doc, you know, you do what you got to do, man. Just fucking wash your hands before you shake mine. I don't care.
01:04:16.48
Mike
Please.
01:04:18.41
Bill
But, um, God, yeah, I'm there. that That is the point, though. Choosing those words. And even if I'm irritated about something, i don't, there's nothing, there's no rule that says that either one of us have to have to voice that.
01:04:26.44
Mike
who
01:04:32.74
Bill
Yeah.
01:04:32.99
Mike
No, absolutely not.
01:04:36.25
Bill
I mean, there's probably more of a societal rule that we shut the fuck up instead, you know?
01:04:39.87
Mike
yeah Exactly.
01:04:40.50
Bill
Right.
01:04:40.51
Mike
Right. Yeah. Well, I mean, you know, it's going to make us feel good for a minute and then it's going to make it worse. Hmm.
01:04:46.74
Bill
right
01:04:47.50
Mike
That doesn't sound familiar at all.
01:04:49.94
Bill
Yeah. And and again, i don't think we're trying to, I know I'm not, and I don't believe you are either, not trying to portray the that that we're perfect, that we never, there's there's a reason that the 12 steps, that there's a 10th one in there.
01:04:58.88
Mike
Oh, God, no. Mm
01:05:04.34
Mike
hmm.
01:05:05.36
Bill
There's a reason that we have the opportunity to promptly admit when we are wrong, which, and again, come back to that fucking story.
01:05:10.34
Mike
Yep.
01:05:13.93
Bill
I didn't figure that, I didn't see that word until I was in Madison. So again, three and a half, four years sober. Wait, when? When we're when.
01:05:21.67
Mike
When? When we are wrong.
01:05:22.83
Bill
but so it means, fuck, that means we're going, oh my God, it's right there.
01:05:25.65
Mike
Yeah.
01:05:25.97
Bill
It says we're going to be Jesus.
01:05:26.46
Mike
Not if. Yes. Mm-hmm.
01:05:29.15
Bill
Yeah, three and a half years sober and I'm sitting at a goddamn meeting and somebody reads that and points it out. And I had to look up at the wall. im like, that that word is in there? Really? It's fucking stupid.
01:05:38.39
Mike
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
01:05:40.50
Bill
but All right. So we're better than we were yesterday. Hopefully we'll be a little bit better tomorrow. is that summing up right?
01:05:44.64
Mike
Yes, that sounds about right.
01:05:47.39
Bill
All right. So um this one that I think I've had sitting around for a little while, but I, I liked the concept and I figured it'd be a decent enough, at least thing to talk about. So, 24 hours a day, and this might have actually come come around recently, come to think of it.
01:06:00.69
Bill
um Try to remember what troubled you. This is what it said in the reading. Just try to remember what troubled you ah most a week ago. You probably will find it difficult to remember.
01:06:07.89
Mike
Yep.
01:06:10.10
Bill
um Then why should you unduly worry or fret over the false problems that arise today?
01:06:10.09
Mike
Mm-hmm.
01:06:15.00
Bill
Okay?
01:06:15.29
Mike
Yep.
01:06:15.80
Bill
So we talk about that, right? And, um you know, I thought about that too. Do you, I mean, even even a week ago, do you... if something was bothering you, do you remember?
01:06:27.48
Mike
No, of course not.
01:06:30.48
Bill
Yeah. I'm like, I, I, if anything, you know, like, like you, you were talking about, you know, everyone to keep weak, always use more money. I suppose it may, maybe I had ah a minor issue at work.
01:06:36.73
Mike
who
01:06:39.05
Bill
Maybe somebody, you know, cut you off in traffic.
01:06:39.79
Mike
Right.
01:06:40.97
Bill
Those are minor things, but was if there was something troubling me a week ago, I don't fucking know what it was.
01:06:41.44
Mike
Mm-hmm. Yeah.
01:06:47.02
Bill
Right.
01:06:47.30
Mike
Right. Yeah. not Not a fucking clue.
01:06:50.97
Bill
Right.
01:06:50.98
Mike
Yeah. yeah So, yeah. why Why stress about it? Because a week from now, yeah, whatever the fuck's going on today, guess what? Tomorrow, it's probably not going to bother you.
01:07:02.12
Bill
Yeah, and that just...
01:07:02.43
Mike
Because there'll be some other shit to bother you.
01:07:02.92
Bill
ah
01:07:04.33
Mike
Mm-hmm.
01:07:05.88
Bill
yeah Something else... we we promise you this. Something else will take its place. And it's the same type of thing that a week from that point, it it won't it won't bother you anyhow. So not none of it...
01:07:15.52
Mike
Right.
01:07:16.82
Bill
It just doesn't matter. That's what I heard.
01:07:18.47
Mike
Yes, that's right.
01:07:19.96
Bill
Yeah.
01:07:19.95
Mike
The wonderful Bill Murray.
01:07:21.99
Bill
yeah
01:07:22.81
Mike
Are you ready for the summer? Are you ready for the summertime?
01:07:29.88
Bill
Oh, yeah. Okay, let's ah go back to God Grammy. I've got some articles, too. I think I have some other things. Hey, you wanna you want to talk about Diddy?
01:07:36.83
Mike
Not really.
01:07:38.87
Bill
yeah I don't either. You know, I thought about those. I, I might put that, I might put that hashtag in our episode, just bury it there because, uh, you know, then just, I think by, by accident, people will find our podcast because I'll put hashtag Diddy in there, but, um, no, no desire to talk about.
01:07:46.08
Mike
ha ha.
01:07:51.72
Mike
Now. Yeah. That is. Yeah. Absolutely not.
01:07:53.98
Bill
The only thing that I did see on, on Instagram today was, uh, it was a meme, like a room full of people kind of cheering and hugging in the, the caption on the meme said, uh, the lube companies when, when Diddy was acquitted.
01:08:00.72
Mike
Nope.
01:08:05.19
Bill
Yeah. And I'm like, no, that's funny. But again, i have some control.
01:08:08.84
Mike
that is
01:08:10.45
Bill
I did not repost that because um he fucked up a lot of people and I don't need to, I don't need to, you know, be a proponent of that.
01:08:14.65
Mike
yeah yeah
01:08:17.92
Bill
So.
01:08:18.35
Mike
absolutely not no
01:08:20.53
Bill
All right, so um God grant me. Today, i will think about the last time I was critical of something. I will talk to my sponsor about and try to find the ways I was using or find the ways I was using using being negative oh using being negative as a defense.
01:08:35.92
Bill
um How could I use the program to change this? So by the the reason i I copied this one down, I mean, um we've we've been honest. We're we're fucking critical of a lot of things.
01:08:44.68
Mike
Well, of course.
01:08:46.03
Bill
um But do you think...
01:08:47.67
Mike
There's a lot to be critical of.
01:08:49.81
Bill
That's, you know, that's, that's a goddamn truth. That is the goddamn truth.
01:08:52.87
Mike
Hashtag Diddy.
01:08:54.23
Bill
yeah didy Okay. um But the, the thing that kind of caught my, caught my eye was um being negative as a defense. So, I mean, do you feel that you do that?
01:09:06.51
Bill
I mean, so we're critical of something negative of something. Are we doing that as a, as a defense mechanism? Do you think, I mean, does that make any sense or is it just out there?
01:09:14.50
Mike
but I mean, used to be, yeah, you know, it's it's deflection.
01:09:15.70
Bill
I don't know. Okay. Okay.
01:09:18.95
Mike
um
01:09:19.17
Bill
Right.
01:09:19.74
Mike
Yeah. as ah when Yeah. Defense, you know, okay. Point something else. See, I'm not as bad as that. um Right. um No, not anymore. i mean, I'm,
01:09:33.76
Mike
I'm critical of things that need fucking criticism. um You know, I, again, stand for certain things today, whatever those are, the good, the positive, the whatever.
01:09:45.47
Mike
And when I run into that negativity, ah you know, yes, I'm going to go, hey, look at that. That's wrong. um
01:09:52.40
Bill
Right.
01:09:53.40
Mike
I'm not, ten I'm definitely not using it to as a deflection. of my own behaviors anymore. um I'm using it to to stand up for what's right.
01:10:05.19
Mike
You know, that's fucking wrong over there.
01:10:05.28
Bill
right
01:10:07.24
Mike
If you want to call it critical, fine. Yes, I'm criticizing that. I'm pointing out that that's the fucking wrong way to live. That's the wrong thing to do. um And, you know, not only to shine a light on it, but also to remind myself of what I used to be and and what not to be today.
01:10:27.89
Bill
Right. Yeah. And that's a that's a good point. And I don't know. I mean, again, thinking about that is that, you know, like you said, I mean, there there just is. I mean, if we're if we're being honest, which we try to be, um there are there are a lot of things out there to to be critical of.
01:10:39.22
Mike
Mm-hmm.
01:10:41.60
Bill
There are a lot of things that are just blatant, you know, where this is.
01:10:42.02
Mike
Yes.
01:10:44.76
Bill
um These are, you know, if nothing else, that the the general understood rules of society. Right.
01:10:51.17
Mike
Mm-hmm.
01:10:51.36
Bill
Right. And when, when you see people go outside of those, like we always talked about, you know, get out there and do something.
01:10:52.14
Mike
Mm-hmm.
01:10:56.52
Bill
Well, you say it every episode, do something nice for somebody.
01:10:57.89
Mike
Yeah.
01:10:59.09
Bill
Don't tell anyone about it.
01:10:59.44
Mike
Yeah. Mm-hmm.
01:11:00.50
Bill
um Same thing as far as when we talk about, you know, other, other ways to recover outside of Alcoholics Anonymous, do whatever you got to do.
01:11:06.22
Mike
Right.
01:11:07.11
Bill
Just don't fuck with people, you know, and don't tell us what to do.
01:11:08.47
Mike
Yes.
01:11:11.02
Mike
Right.
01:11:11.35
Bill
We're not going to tell you how to stay sober. You know, don't take away our words. Don't try to fucking rewrite our books.
01:11:15.91
Mike
ah this Yep.
01:11:17.35
Bill
um You know, just leave us alone. We're fine. We're not, and We're doing over here doing our thing. You do your thing. you know Just don't fuck with people.
01:11:23.58
Mike
Exactly.
01:11:23.75
Bill
um But yeah, i don't see I don't think there's anything wrong with being critical of of you know people that are out there you know seriously doing wrong.
01:11:31.50
Mike
Yeah.
01:11:31.74
Bill
um you know
01:11:31.78
Mike
Right. You know, starting fires and shooting firefighters who are putting it out.
01:11:32.58
Bill
But like you said, not a deflection.
01:11:36.13
Bill
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:11:37.06
Mike
Yeah. Yeah.
01:11:37.72
Bill
That was fucked up.
01:11:37.74
Mike
Yeah. Right. Yeah, big time. I mean, you know, I'm ah not a big fan of any sort of authorities or, you know, um yeah government servants, whatever, all that good stuff.
01:11:51.15
Mike
I don't talk about it on here a lot, but because it's not what we're doing here.
01:11:51.60
Bill
Right.
01:11:56.00
Bill
Right.
01:11:56.06
Mike
But yeah, but firefighters, right? These are guys and men and women who, you know, run into burning buildings. You know, I'm going to fucking run out of a burning building.
01:12:04.07
Bill
right
01:12:06.55
Mike
um These people run into them. um I've always said that they could do whatever the fuck they want. I have huge respect for firefighters. Um, yeah.
01:12:15.60
Bill
Right.
01:12:16.21
Mike
So, you know, ah to just, you know, what are you, you want to shoot at cops? You want to shoot at sho soldiers? Um, you know, they've got guns too. They can shoot back.
01:12:26.84
Mike
That's fine. I got no problem with any of that, but, ah but don't fucking shoot at people that are trying to save other people.
01:12:34.00
Bill
Right.
01:12:34.07
Mike
Just, yeah, that's, that's awful. There's my criticism for the day.
01:12:39.24
Bill
Yeah. and on And on top of that, then, you know, I mean, the the end result of that was that, you know, they they the dude shot himself. Okay. so
01:12:45.25
Mike
Yeah, good.
01:12:45.60
Bill
So here's the thing.
01:12:46.32
Mike
Here, cut out the middleman.
01:12:46.44
Bill
Here's here's my...
01:12:47.92
Mike
Just fucking shoot yourself.
01:12:49.47
Bill
Exactly what I was just going to say. Leave your leave your matches at home. Leave your gun at home. Go walk into the woods and shoot yourself. Well, you got to bring your gun to shoot yourself.
01:12:56.83
Mike
Yeah, you got to bring your gun.
01:12:57.38
Bill
Okay, I'm sorry.
01:12:57.83
Mike
Right.
01:12:58.31
Bill
So take your gun.
01:12:58.33
Mike
and Leave the matches.
01:12:59.85
Bill
leave Leave your matches in your lighter at home.
01:13:01.72
Mike
Right. And just take one bullet.
01:13:02.67
Bill
um
01:13:03.38
Mike
Uh-huh.
01:13:03.91
Bill
Yeah, t take one bullet. Yeah, don't miss. Just put it right up there.
01:13:07.70
Mike
but
01:13:08.18
Bill
Don't miss. But then, you know, and yeah, leave, like you said, the the people that are all trying to turn to save the the shit that you just started, they're going to fucking, oh yeah.
01:13:09.04
Mike
ahha
01:13:16.02
Bill
When I, when I saw that I had, I, I kind of double took a double take. I'm like, are you fucking kidding me? The guy little, I'm like, Jesus.
01:13:20.89
Mike
out
01:13:22.20
Bill
Yeah. That's, that's a special kind of asshole right there.
01:13:24.53
Mike
Yes, it is.
01:13:24.80
Bill
But, but yeah, you know, in the end, like, like you said, yes.
01:13:26.27
Mike
now We're going to be critical of that. see
01:13:29.58
Bill
Hey, ladies and gentlemen, we just found a real life example of things that we're going to be critical of.
01:13:30.85
Mike
yeah Yes. Yep.
01:13:35.79
Bill
Yes, exactly.
01:13:36.67
Mike
We're going to stand up against wrong.
01:13:36.79
Bill
Exactly.
01:13:39.09
Mike
We're going to stand for right.
01:13:39.40
Bill
Right.
01:13:41.28
Mike
And if you're being wrong, we're going to point that out.
01:13:45.10
Bill
Exactly. All right. So, um, Oh, you know, real quick, speaking of right and wrong. So, um, when I was, i went down to, uh, Oh, by the way, the fucking Illinois people, they, they do a good job on this, on trails and stuff like, yeah, the fibs, fibs do okay on that, on that park area that I went to.
01:13:55.94
Mike
Fibs.
01:13:58.45
Mike
Okay.
01:14:00.24
Bill
It was seriously, I was, what it reminded me of was, um, some of the places I go around Lake of the Ozarks, not the drive into there, but once you get in kind of bluffs in the trails and whatever.
01:14:07.24
Mike
so Yeah. Okay.
01:14:09.76
Bill
And, um,
01:14:10.20
Mike
Cool.
01:14:10.98
Bill
You know, but it's it's right by a river, kind of populated on on certain sides and getting in there. But um very beautiful. Nice trails. it was I enjoyed it. It was hotter than fuck, but it was nice. um
01:14:20.57
Mike
go
01:14:21.30
Bill
I enjoyed every every second of it. But um the thing of it is, and so, okay, Mike, let me ask you a quick question here.
01:14:27.18
Mike
Yes.
01:14:28.19
Bill
You drive for a living, correct?
01:14:29.38
Mike
I do.
01:14:30.24
Bill
Okay. And I know even if you didn't drive for a living, if you drove a vehicle, you might know the rules of the road.
01:14:34.68
Mike
i
01:14:34.82
Bill
So in the in the United States where we are right now, what side of the road do you drive on?
01:14:35.23
Mike
guess.
01:14:39.20
Mike
Yes. ah The right side.
01:14:43.57
Bill
Okay. So right side of the road, which means that anyone coming the other direction, they would have an open lane, correct?
01:14:50.58
Mike
But you would think.
01:14:51.85
Bill
Okay. So just out of curiosity, when you're in a grocery store, for instance, would you use the same logic?
01:14:55.45
Mike
Uh-huh. I try to. Mm-hmm.
01:14:58.79
Bill
Yeah, for the most part, right? You know, you don't let people pass. Now, hi hiking trails, um and there are certain trails that I've been on where there's like literally there's fucking signs.
01:15:02.24
Mike
Yes. Mm-hmm.
01:15:09.31
Bill
They're like, you know, when when you're going up the mountain, you stay on the right-hand side. People are coming down, stay out of the way.
01:15:13.38
Mike
Mm-hmm.
01:15:14.58
Bill
There's a lot of people that jog and stuff like that, stay out of the way.
01:15:17.01
Mike
Right.
01:15:17.17
Bill
And then other ones will say joggers announce yourself coming up that you're passing on the left type of thing.
01:15:20.26
Mike
Mm-hmm.
01:15:21.33
Bill
You see it. They make fun of it on TV shows.
01:15:22.19
Mike
Yeah. Sure.
01:15:23.89
Bill
um But it's, it is, it's, it's an etiquette type of thing.
01:15:26.50
Mike
Yeah.
01:15:26.60
Bill
If I see somebody jogging coming at me on a trail, I sidestep and I'll stay the side. get They're fucking running.
01:15:31.63
Mike
Yeah.
01:15:32.46
Bill
You know, um if I see somebody with a,
01:15:32.66
Mike
Right. Yeah.
01:15:36.12
Bill
With a dog, you know, it's like ah maybe a couple with their dog or two.
01:15:39.54
Mike
Mm-hmm.
01:15:40.09
Bill
um Same thing. I'll step off to the side. Or if it's a family, especially with kids, I'll step off to the side and let them pass me the other way.
01:15:44.03
Mike
Sure.
01:15:46.73
Mike
How dare you.
01:15:46.75
Bill
Okay. I know, you know, that that whole courtesy thing. Right. But here's where I lose my fucking mind a little bit is when I'm walking on a trail and you're walking up and you've got enough where people can pass on on the left and right, you know, coming and going.
01:15:53.90
Mike
Aha.
01:16:01.61
Mike
Mm-hmm.
01:16:02.70
Bill
And there's people on both sides and in the middle.
01:16:02.72
Mike
All right.
01:16:05.80
Mike
Hmm.
01:16:06.63
Bill
And they're blocking the entire fucking trail. Okay.
01:16:08.82
Mike
Right. Mm-hmm.
01:16:09.49
Bill
So this, um, this park I went to again, it, well, it was free and, uh, hundreds and hundreds of people, a lot of fucking people, not terrible, except for little pockets like that.
01:16:17.80
Mike
Mm-hmm.
01:16:20.07
Mike
Sure.
01:16:20.43
Bill
Uh, but lots of stairs. So same thing, you know, people trying to cut around on the stairs, no etiquette.
01:16:24.08
Mike
Hmm.
01:16:24.88
Bill
But I'm, you know, I'm in this one, it's like this flat area and there's this fucking family and there's this kid, um probably 9, 10, 11, somewhere in that area.
01:16:32.85
Mike
Yeah.
01:16:33.96
Bill
Part of the family on the left, part of the family on the right, probably eight of them total. And then this kid standing in the middle, holding court, you know, talking to to the one side while the other ones are listening, right?
01:16:42.01
Mike
Yeah. Yeah.
01:16:45.75
Bill
And I'm walking up and I'm like,
01:16:45.83
Mike
yeah
01:16:47.52
Bill
And the dad's on the right-hand side. And I'm walking up. I'm like, and the dad looks and he sees me coming up. I'm not doing anything, but I'm like, fuck it.
01:16:52.51
Mike
ah
01:16:54.32
Bill
I just, ah right right in front of the kid, I just kind of cut through. And you hear the dad's like, whoa.
01:16:57.68
Mike
yeah
01:16:59.81
Bill
And in in my head, I'm like, I could have fucking shoulder chucked the little fucker too, you know?
01:17:03.12
Mike
yeah yeah yeah
01:17:04.89
Bill
I could have done that, but um you know I didn't. In my head, I'm like, I just kept on walking. I didn't i didn't bump him. I didn't touch him. I didn't do anything like that.
01:17:12.69
Mike
Right.
01:17:13.50
Bill
I just literally walked in front of him to make a point, and I did. I caught off his conversation on purpose.
01:17:18.91
Mike
Yeah.
01:17:19.01
Bill
So hopefully that maybe the parent might say, bleh.
01:17:21.89
Mike
no No, well, yeah, the the parent clearly who's enraptured with what a fucking 10 year old has to say, ah doesn't have a whole lot going on between the years to begin with.
01:17:23.62
Bill
hey
01:17:33.58
Mike
So, yeah, right.
01:17:34.41
Bill
Right. But then there's, so there's this other, another situation, which this was how, in my opinion, how it should have been handled. This lady, she had a younger baby on one of the front kind of like knapsack type of things in front of her.
01:17:46.05
Mike
Yeah, right.
01:17:46.88
Bill
A couple of kids running around. And then um one was standing right in the middle of the stairway that I was, that I was going to walk down. And I walked up, then I stopped and she's like, Oh, whatever his name, Joey.
01:17:54.18
Mike
Right.
01:17:57.15
Bill
She's like, Oh, Joey, get out of the She's like, I'm so sorry.
01:17:57.47
Mike
Yeah,
01:17:59.51
Bill
And I'm like, I've got a grandson the same age. I'm like, they, they do that.
01:18:02.55
Mike
right. Yeah, right.
01:18:05.70
Bill
You know, but but here's two things. Number one, his age. That's number one.
01:18:09.33
Mike
hu
01:18:09.54
Bill
um But on top of that, the fact that she's cognizant of what's going on. Right.
01:18:13.00
Mike
Yeah, right.
01:18:13.68
Bill
um And I'm just like, OK, so that's the way it should be. She's like, oh, I know my kids sitting there being a little asshole in your way.
01:18:16.40
Mike
Yeah, of course. Uh-huh.
01:18:18.76
Bill
So I'm going to get him out of your way.
01:18:21.22
Mike
Yeah.
01:18:21.57
Bill
um You know, it's just it's this fucking etiquette that I just people have no. Again, there's my criticism, my added and and criticism.
01:18:25.89
Mike
of
01:18:30.87
Mike
Yes.
01:18:32.59
Bill
So anyhow, but yeah, I just literally as I um as i walked by, I'm like, God, I could have just shoulder-shocked that little fucker. Never would have done it. Well, not never, not not sober.
01:18:42.99
Mike
Right. Right. yeah Exactly.
01:18:44.90
Bill
Yeah.
01:18:46.16
Mike
ah Again, you know, thought about it. Just didn't do it. Mm-hmm.
01:18:49.46
Bill
Oh, yeah. And literally, like ah like you say, kids, my thoughts are all kind of fucked up. And that's literally, literally what the thought was. Just shoulder chucking that little motherfucker right into his dad.
01:18:57.81
Mike
Right.
01:18:58.77
Bill
And just keep on walking.
01:18:58.79
Mike
Yeah, exactly. yeah and Give the dead dad an elbow, too.
01:19:00.40
Bill
What's it?
01:19:02.31
Mike
Uh-huh.
01:19:03.89
Bill
yeah Right in his fat ass belly.
01:19:05.79
Mike
Yep.
01:19:06.69
Bill
All right. So um i and I think I got a couple of articles here. so um So here's one. And I didn't read this one. I thought this would be kind of kind of funny because even though I this doesn't apply to me, but maybe this applies to you a little bit.
01:19:20.31
Mike
All right.
01:19:20.55
Bill
The article title is I'm a couple psychologists. The happiest people do these five things on weekends and most forget them. OK, so I think they're talking about doing things as a couple.
01:19:34.48
Mike
Okay.
01:19:35.45
Bill
um Where does the list start?
01:19:37.32
Mike
it Go ahead.
01:19:39.37
Bill
Hang on one second here. I know. I was thinking if ah if if fuck if fucking isn't in here, then the there's something wrong with the...
01:19:42.72
Mike
Yeah. Yeah. All right.
01:19:46.60
Bill
yeah Something wrong with this. Okay, so the first one is making quality time count without digital distractions. So you can... I mean, that could be fucking, right?
01:19:55.88
Mike
yeah
01:19:56.90
Bill
yeah Okay, so there's one about fucking.
01:19:58.75
Mike
all right
01:19:59.02
Bill
um Oh, here we go. Finding balance with togetherness and personal space. Okay, so fucking and then just relaxing for a minute.
01:20:05.61
Mike
Mm-hmm.
01:20:08.29
Mike
Yes.
01:20:08.47
Bill
Okay.
01:20:09.10
Mike
Right.
01:20:09.40
Bill
I'm going fucking ruin this article by just putting every one of these about fucking. um Okay. Building rituals and embracing laughter for lasting joy.
01:20:20.25
Bill
Well, I hope you're laughing while fucking.
01:20:21.13
Mike
Mm-hmm.
01:20:23.79
Bill
Okay.
01:20:24.78
Mike
Smiling, at least.
01:20:26.16
Bill
Yeah, smile. That was it. God, that was it. Okay. God, what the fuck? That was... I thought that was going to be... all never mind. God, that was... that Okay, I'm sorry, everyone, except for the fact that we laughed about fucking that are that article sucked.
01:20:37.16
Mike
All right.
01:20:38.46
Bill
i thought there was I thought that might be something we could make more fun of, but okay, never mind.
01:20:43.21
Mike
Yeah.
01:20:44.16
Bill
um Oh, this one, i you might have heard this. is a This has nothing to do with sobriety as my articles normally don't. But okay, so you may have heard this on one of your kicker stories with Alan Cox, but this came up the other day.
01:20:56.22
Mike
Yeah.
01:20:58.15
Bill
All right, so they're often in air of anxiousness for tourists as they um is they queue at transport security or TSA checkpoints at airports, many fearing that they're going to be secluded or selected for a pat-down or that something could drop.
01:21:13.10
Bill
but luggage, blah, blah, blah. Okay. So do you get nervous going through TSA at all ever? I mean, not that you necessarily have anything, but I mean,
01:21:17.34
Mike
No. Well, I'm dripping in fucking metal, so I pretty much expect it.
01:21:22.72
Bill
well, yeah that's a, that's a good point. That's a good point.
01:21:26.78
Mike
Yeah, you know.
01:21:27.31
Bill
That's yeah.
01:21:30.56
Bill
I keep, I keep forgetting that, but, um, right.
01:21:32.46
Mike
Right. But, i mean you know, and again, yeah, yeah and ah but I'm not, I don't have anything illicit or legal or whatever.
01:21:40.53
Bill
Right.
01:21:40.62
Mike
So, you know, yeah, you know, as I walk through life, I walk through the airport. Yeah. if I got nothing to hide, man, check me out. I don't care.
01:21:48.02
Bill
yeah Exactly. All right. So the nerves can get so easily or so easily get to you. And so often the masses, blah, blah, blah. And one of those felt this anxiety was a five foot eight, 165 pound midsize adult woman who shared on Reddit that her crotch.
01:22:04.96
Bill
Okay.
01:22:05.85
Mike
Yes.
01:22:06.05
Bill
Was, was flagged twice. Okay.
01:22:08.27
Mike
but it did Was it saluted as well?
01:22:13.22
Bill
yeah but and That took me a second.
01:22:17.68
Mike
it
01:22:18.51
Bill
ah Flagged and saluted. I like that. Thank you.
01:22:20.56
Mike
yeah Well, it is the weekend, right?
01:22:20.87
Bill
Thank you for it. that
01:22:22.40
Mike
We're supposed to wave that flag. Hmm.
01:22:24.23
Bill
it It really is. So, okay. So she wanted to know why she was recently stopped and padded in the same region of her groin twice.
01:22:26.04
Mike
Should
01:22:33.80
Bill
Adding that she was, she was wearing, adding that she was wearing bike shorts and normal underwear.
01:22:35.08
Mike
have to pay extra for that?
01:22:40.54
Bill
Um, and then once the, one person said, you know, were you sweating? Okay. She says probably a little, so here's the deal and here's what happens.
01:22:45.75
Mike
Okay.
01:22:49.05
Bill
And here's where the rest of the article goes to. Um, apparently, and I want to read the actual determination on here. Um, God damn, where was it? Oh, fuck. I'm getting all these pop-up ads.
01:23:01.45
Bill
The bottom line is, is that apparently when, when people sweat, it can actually um almost like form, ah I don't know, some sort of thing that an x-ray will pick up, you know?
01:23:13.10
Mike
okay
01:23:14.43
Bill
So they're, they're saying that, you know, this time a year and stuff like that, a lot of times when people get flagged down where you're, where they have to do the wand and stuff like that is because of, of sweat. So yeah, this, this lady apparently had a fucking,
01:23:27.41
Mike
A pocket of moisture. Yeah.
01:23:29.13
Bill
Yeah, she's fucking sweaty ass, sweaty ass crotch.
01:23:30.71
Mike
Yeah.
01:23:32.45
Bill
So, um, so she has, she got flagged down a couple of times and I'm like, you know, it's bad enough. And I've gotten pulled. There was ah again a, again, time when I traveled years ago that, uh, you know i think that I, I followed the patterns of the, you know, the, like the, the terrorists, because I kept every time I flew, I got pulled aside.
01:23:47.52
Bill
Um, Which is just, it was inconvenient. Again, even even then, i didn't have anything.
01:23:50.72
Mike
yeah
01:23:52.59
Bill
And I used to carry booze with me when you could.
01:23:54.92
Mike
Right.
01:23:55.02
Bill
And I never got in trouble or anything for it.
01:23:55.34
Mike
Mm-hmm.
01:23:58.21
Bill
But it's just no fun being pulled out of line. But on top of that, finding out, well, sorry, man, but your crotch is sopping wet.
01:24:05.39
Mike
Okay.
01:24:07.35
Bill
Are you just happy to see me? Eh?
01:24:09.16
Mike
a
01:24:09.44
Bill
Eh?
01:24:12.23
Bill
All right, so I'll give you the choice of these last two. So um ah silent mode phone users share similar psychological traits. That's one.
01:24:20.49
Mike
okay
01:24:20.82
Bill
Or we can go back to we had a couple from last week that we didn't get to or the week before. People who speak more than they listen in conversations typically give just typically display these traits.
01:24:31.85
Bill
Or there was 10 phrases people with below average social skills use.
01:24:37.39
Mike
I like the phone one. What is the silent phone thing?
01:24:41.28
Bill
Okay.
01:24:41.70
Mike
Intrigues me.
01:24:42.94
Bill
Yeah, and that's ah I copy that one because i never have my i had my phone. my The only time my ringer is on is at night, and that seems weird, but I have it down to the fact where it's just you know certain people.
01:24:52.27
Mike
Well, yeah, if you're at work, you're on the phone, you can't have your phone going off. That makes sense.
01:24:56.89
Bill
Yeah, and i just i haven't had it i haven't add it on a ringer mode in fucking years, just years and years.
01:24:57.46
Mike
You know.
01:25:00.92
Mike
Right. I mean, i I put, okay, so I put mine on every day. i turn it off at night. oh I have the ringer really low and I've got, you know, I've got the settings where, you know, you or Chris or or Lydia call me, you know, it ah it'll ring.
01:25:16.39
Mike
Everybody else could go to hell.
01:25:16.71
Bill
Right.
01:25:18.44
Mike
Um, yeah you know, yeah, I mean, and, but no, during the day and stuff, I have my, my notifications and my ringer is up.
01:25:19.43
Bill
Right. Yeah.
01:25:26.56
Mike
Um, usually on the weekend, I'll turn them off and I won't turn it back on until Sunday night when I'm getting ready to start my whatever. But yeah, um, I generally during the day, you know, waking hours, all that good stuff.
01:25:40.12
Mike
My ringer and notifications are up.
01:25:42.44
Bill
Right. Yeah, well, I guess i that is true because I always hear your you've got specific, you know, specific ah you know the the tones, you know, with your text messages and all those sort of things.
01:25:47.22
Mike
Yeah. Yeah. Yes, I do.
01:25:50.55
Bill
So, yeah, but it's just, i I don't know. I don't remember when I started doing silent mode, probably before I really needed to with work. But but yeah, I mean, for me, ah that's a good point. I guess like I don't think about it even with the work thing because i just always have it silent anyhow.
01:26:03.00
Bill
Yeah.
01:26:02.99
Mike
Right.
01:26:03.76
Bill
Okay, so the title of the article, people keep their cell phones on silent mode, share similar psychological traits. New study from blah, blah, blah, 7, whether a mind or mobile mindfulness training program could improve stress.
01:26:09.34
Mike
hmm.
01:26:16.62
Bill
um Experimental study finds, I'm trying to get to list. Okay, silent phones and personal space. Your cognitive capacity is significantly significantly reduced when your smartphone is within reach, even if it's off.
01:26:30.57
Bill
Okay, so I get that. People who mute their device often tuck them away as well, reclaiming cognitive capacity in a calm workspace. Okay, so I i don't do that.
01:26:41.87
Bill
I mean, i my phone still, it's on vibrate. So it's not like I'm not, you know, still it's the same thing.
01:26:44.30
Mike
Right.
01:26:46.19
Bill
It's just not ringing.
01:26:47.35
Mike
Right.
01:26:47.56
Bill
Um, second one, taking charge of your time disruptions consume more than seconds, uh, more than the seconds they steal estimate that after an interruption takes 23 minutes and 15 seconds to regain full focus.
01:27:01.34
Bill
Really?
01:27:01.74
Mike
Jesus, how fucking stupid are you?
01:27:03.97
Bill
I was thinking the same thing.
01:27:05.08
Mike
ha ha ha ha.
01:27:06.38
Bill
By controlling notification windows, a big group replies and set blocks and shave hours out the week, blah, blah, blah. um Silent phones and mindfulness. The same the same crowd that often or often embraces mindfulness, turning the once noisy handset into a pocket coach.
01:27:22.51
Bill
A four-week mobile mindfulness program lifted attention and vitality ah among Korean office workers, showing that a quiet phone can foster calm rather than craving.
01:27:32.49
Mike
Hmm.
01:27:32.58
Bill
Which, I mean, I as suppose as I get that. Like you just said, weekends you'll turn it off. And, you know, there's the point because you don't have to be you know have to be on, right?
01:27:35.75
Mike
Yeah.
01:27:39.37
Mike
Right, exactly.
01:27:41.33
Bill
Silent phones reduce stress. Noise primes the body for action even when message is trivial. um Keeping the ringtone off shields the nervous system from that steady stream of alerts, letting heart rate and blah, blah, blah stay low, long stretches.
01:27:54.62
Bill
Okay.
01:27:54.77
Mike
I don't, know my heart rate doesn't go up when my phone goes off.
01:27:57.30
Bill
ah Now, I know, but I mean, it's just one of those things that we're, I think we're all a little bit, you know, kind of, again, speaking of freedom or lack of, you know, we're all slaves to our phone to a certain extent.
01:28:00.06
Mike
Yeah.
01:28:07.76
Mike
Sure.
01:28:08.13
Bill
um And even when when I started, um you know, working this job, um I turned off, i I silenced all my Instagram notifications because, you know, with our,
01:28:17.03
Mike
oh yeah. Well, yeah. All that stuff i i've I've had off forever.
01:28:21.84
Bill
Yeah, see, and I have, I don't, I mean, i don't get much activity on Facebook, but I, every once in a while I get messages from people on on Facebook, rarely, but there's a few people that even though they have my phone number, will message me through Facebook.
01:28:28.45
Mike
Mm-hmm.
01:28:32.38
Bill
Like Kimmy, Kimmy will send me videos, you know, through Facebook, for instance.
01:28:32.77
Mike
Right. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Sure. Yeah. Yeah. I got people that do that. and Yeah. You know, ah again, but you know, during the day I'll have it up and it'll make its little noise and whatever, you know, yeah.
01:28:41.09
Bill
Right.
01:28:44.70
Bill
Right.
01:28:45.25
Mike
i don Okay. Somebody sent me something. When I get a second, I'll take a look at it.
01:28:51.27
Bill
Right. Yeah. It's so it's that not like a super stress. I can, I can see. so I mean, the, the Instagram things where they were driving me nuts because for a while there we were, our, our Instagram page was so fucking busy.
01:28:57.60
Mike
Oh yeah.
01:29:01.73
Bill
It's just the notifications were just, I, I'm like, I can't, I can't even, it's distracting me when I'm trying to work.
01:29:02.03
Mike
Right.
01:29:07.30
Bill
So I, I get the point.
01:29:07.59
Mike
Yeah.
01:29:09.06
Bill
I get the point of that. Right.
01:29:10.13
Mike
Yeah. I mean, youre right. If you've got, if again, man, yeah. If you, if you've got all your social media stuff, every time something happens, it fucking makes your phone ping.
01:29:20.39
Bill
Right.
01:29:20.90
Mike
You got some other issues going on.
01:29:23.30
Bill
Well, and I didn't even have all that. I just had when, you know, the, whatever the basic notifications were, you know, like comments and things like whatever it was.
01:29:28.67
Mike
Right. Yeah.
01:29:30.63
Bill
And it just, it was just,
01:29:30.65
Mike
Right. Yeah. All that shit. Right. No, I have, I've never had that stuff on ever. Right.
01:29:36.09
Bill
Well, and I did with, and I still do, I don't necessarily have all the things on Facebook, but i've never I never had the type of activity on Facebook or anything like that.
01:29:47.35
Bill
Even LinkedIn, when I was active on LinkedIn, um that we got on Instagram, or probably that we even still get on Instagram.
01:29:47.74
Mike
Mm-hmm. Right.
01:29:52.07
Mike
Right.
01:29:54.40
Bill
um and We don't have a huge following, but it's big enough where we get a lot of activity.
01:29:58.67
Mike
Sure.
01:29:58.78
Bill
um And I wasn't used to it. That's why to begin with, I mean, I had all the all the notifications up because it just, it was, habit i guess if nothing else but so um next one chasing depth over buzz speaking of sobriety a single ringtone can shatter the fragile cadence of a heartfelt talk okay i get that to a scent uh silent but i mean it shouldn't i mean i i understand the concept but i don't think it's going to ruin my life silent phone people stay fully engaged catching pauses and tone shifts otherwise missed blah blah blah um working in the flow
01:30:06.94
Mike
Yeah.
01:30:11.59
Mike
Yeah.
01:30:17.02
Mike
fantastic
01:30:28.38
Mike
Right. Well, you got to remember, we also grew up where, you know, the only phone we had was in the house and it fucking, when it rang, it rang. You never turned that shit off.
01:30:36.55
Bill
Right? Yeah, that's true. yeah the ah You see that memes every once in a while. This is how we used to block people. You see the the phone off the hook.
01:30:43.21
Mike
Right. Right. Yeah, right. Yeah.
01:30:48.16
Bill
Okay, so working in flow. People check their phones more often than their devices or when their devices were in silent mode. um The effect was strongest among people high in fear of missing out.
01:30:59.34
Bill
Okay, blah, blah.
01:31:00.18
Mike
yeah
01:31:01.37
Bill
Self-awareness on silent mode of the core of it, self-knowledge silent phone users recognize how easily, easily sound hijacks thoughts. So they craft environments to support their goals, all that stuff. So, I mean, a lot of this stuff is basically, but I don't know. and It seems to me kind of like you've been saying that, you know, if people, if people have this problem, they might have other issues.
01:31:19.75
Mike
Yeah, exactly.
01:31:20.28
Bill
Um,
01:31:21.20
Mike
Yeah. I mean, if again, you know, all the, all the bells and whistles and you got that shit on and it's constantly going. Yeah. Well, why would you live like that?
01:31:31.53
Mike
That's, that's dumb. Yeah.
01:31:33.39
Bill
Right.
01:31:33.39
Mike
You know, I, I have my ringer on if my phone rings, someone makes a phone call to my phone. i want the w ringer on during the day.
01:31:39.22
Bill
Right.
01:31:41.46
Mike
Um, just so I can glance over and, you know, see what the fuck it is, if it's important or not, you know. I mean, most of the time it's a goddamn telemarketer or something. and i just bit hit the fucking thing and, you know, hang up on them.
01:31:54.34
Bill
Right.
01:31:54.96
Mike
Yeah.
01:31:55.87
Bill
But I mean, like ah people, i mean, basically that article was talking about people, I mean, really almost like their, their life is all fucked up by having their phone on, which, I mean, I, I, whether my phone was on or not, was, you know, bing, bing, bing, it probably fucking annoyed me more than, more than like, you know, actually affect my, I don't know, my peace and my serenity.
01:32:03.52
Mike
Yeah.
01:32:09.51
Mike
Right.
01:32:13.59
Bill
ah I'm sure it would fucking annoy me more than anything. so
01:32:16.23
Mike
Yeah, exactly.
01:32:18.80
Bill
right. So, um, I don't know. I mean, we did, uh, you know, for, for a Wednesday, what do you think we do a decent enough work? You know, I mean, I, I don't think we, we didn't like fucking mail it in.
01:32:25.94
Mike
Yes.
01:32:27.78
Bill
We didn't just, you know, I don't know.
01:32:29.21
Mike
no
01:32:29.64
Bill
Didn't fuck around or well, didn't fuck off. We fucked around,
01:32:32.45
Mike
Right. We always. Now.
01:32:34.84
Bill
hey but now I think how how's this for a segue? Now we're ready to fuck off.
01:32:39.34
Mike
o now
01:32:41.64
Bill
Are we ready?
01:32:41.73
Mike
i I believe so. I believe so. Well, thank you everyone for listening to you yet another episode of Sober Not Mature. Have a wonderful Independence Day. go out and do something nice for somebody else and don't tell anybody you did it.
01:32:56.63
Mike
And now, from the bottom of my heart to the depths of my soul, from the beginning of time till the ends of the earth, always and eternally, fuck you.
01:33:10.84
Mike
Now it's time, kids. It is that time. It's time for you to fuck off. Then keep fucking off. Keep fucking off till you get to a gate with a sign on it saying, you cannot fuck off past here.
01:33:23.37
Mike
Climb over that gate, dream your impossible dream, and keep fucking off forever.
01:33:30.60
Bill
Yeah, and since we didn't have a chance to really talk about in depth, not that it needs to be, but as Mike always says on these holiday weekends, it's just another fucking day. you know
01:33:38.42
Mike
it is.
01:33:39.08
Bill
The weekend is just another weekend, even though I i probably you know think that 4th of July is probably one of the bigger you know drinking and partying partying party yeah partying summer holidays.
01:33:47.14
Mike
but
01:33:49.11
Bill
But yeah, if you're if you're new or or uncomfortable or uneasy, sit it out, man.
01:33:49.34
Mike
listen
01:33:54.77
Bill
Then you'll be able to you know live another day and you know another day sober, and you can go have some fun next year.
01:33:55.10
Mike
Yeah.
01:34:00.64
Mike
Exactly.
01:34:01.97
Bill
So if you're listening to this and you haven't done any of your crazy 4th of July shit, oh yeah, don't don't play with fireworks to get your hands pulling off either. Keep all your fingers.
01:34:10.80
Mike
Yeah. Right. Yeah. You might need those fingers for something fun later.
01:34:15.60
Bill
yeah Speaking of fucking... All right, man. Well, on that note, again, i love you, brother.
01:34:24.34
Mike
Love you too.
01:34:25.70
Bill
We'll talk soon. Bye.
01:34:26.59
Mike
We shall. by
